Warning: Book Cover Says "Complete and Unabridged" - It Isn't.,
By
This review is from: Les Miserables (Mass Market Paperback)
I purchased this publication of Les Miserables because the book cover actually says in bold capital letters "COMPLETE AND UNABRIDGED" right under Victor Hugo's name.I needed the complete and unabridged version because I am using it for scholarly purposes, but was surprised to find that this version is severely abridged and did not contain most of Hugo's more introspective, philosophical musings that the unabridged version does. If you want a quick, condensed reading of the basic plot line of Les Miserables, this book does well, but if you want to experience the true richness of Hugo's thoughts, buy a truly unabridged version from another publisher (I recommend Wilbour's translation - I had to buy it after purchasing this one and being disappointed). So, BEWARE THE CLAIMS OF THE BOOK COVER!

I am not a movie buff , I would much rather read the book and sometimes, go see the movie. When I saw the movie previews on t.v. the story drew me to the book. It wasn't very expensive, cheaper than going to the movies actually, although it is written in very small print. I am thoroughly enjoying the story based on the human condition in France at that time.Victor Hugo is a very good writer!

Don't buy. This is not the real book! It is abridged. The 1st chapter in the book I borrowed from library has 50 pages, while this version has only 4 pages! Same font size, similar paper size. How can the publisher claim it is COMPLETE AND UNABRIDGED? It is a scam!!!

I haven't actually read it yet, but this is the abridged version, that does not include so many details. I could not even follow along with the audio book because half of the parts were not even there. Get the unabridged version! Signet Classics has a very inexpensive unabridged version of Les Miserables.

Victor Hugo's book is terrific. I'm guessing it was originally scripted in French, however, translated, the dynamic of the text is still truly artistic.
