Think Gary Cooper, tall, rich, dangerous American, and Jennifer Jones, piquant, beautiful, English urchin who is really a British aristocrat, daughter of a Duchess who was murdered by her sister in law and an Earl who was murdered by his brother and taken away by a nefarious one eyed murderer who lives a double life as a rich Englishman to live in a hovel in London with his half sister who is a lady of the night and who conceals the girl's identity and dresses her like a boy and teaches her how to be a pickpocket but one day......you get the idea. There is a fair amount of incredible sex, constant misunderstandings, unacknowledged love, poisoned cats, loyal servants, and it goes on and on. It is a very thick paperback (537 pages, smallish type,) but it was a relief to be finally done with it. Not a bad book. Lots of familiar cliches and no surprises. Take it to the beach or ski lodge and if you lose it, you have not lost much. Happy ever after ending, villains all dead, wrongs been righted, eternal love etc. etc.
