Great introduction to iPhone development
This book does exactly what it claims to, and it's much better than the Erica Sadun book on iPhone recipes. While I would love to see some more advanced topics discussed, I realize it would be too much for an "intro" book. I am looking forward to their soon-to-be-released follow-up!

Okay for beginners, not so good for experienced developers
I'm on chapter 9 of this book, and so far I have learned quite a lot about the Cocoa Touch framework but I think this book could've been 1/3 of its size. The author is too verbose in explaining things. It is okay if he's trying to explain the code or the APIs, but I don't need 2 pages worth of text trying to tell me how to drag a text field and label to the view in...

Okay for beginners, not so good for experienced developers, Oct. 12 2009
I'm on chapter 9 of this book, and so far I have learned quite a lot about the Cocoa Touch framework but I think this book could've been 1/3 of its size. The author is too verbose in explaining things. It is okay if he's trying to explain the code or the APIs, but I don't need 2 pages worth of text trying to tell me how to drag a text field and label to the view in Interface Builder. Just show a screenshot or two would do. Worse, the tutorial instructions are not clearly highlighted, so it's very hard to skim through his filler text.
My suggestion to the author/editor:
-Clearly differentiate between tutorial instructions and lesson contents.
-More screen shots, less words
-Have brief chapters dedicated Objective C, XCode and interface builder.
In conclusion, this book is aimed at the absolute beginner. Readers with programming experience may find themselves very impatient with this book. It is also a very bad reference book since the tutorial instructions and knowledge/concept materials are interweaved

Excellent book, Sep 19 2009
This is an excellent book but you have to read End to End and resume it to extract your step by step procedures. Also, the complex Audio Unit Core is not discussed in this book.
The rest is perfect. Thanks to the authors.

Solid overview, Mai 21 2009
One of two books I purchased to have an iPhone SDK reference, and this one is definitely the best. Lots of illustrations of the UI concepts helped me understand some of the details a bit better. Also has an errata Web page that answered a few questions I had. Only minor quibbles, e.g. using XIB files to create custom table views is something Apple discourages because of performance issues (do them entirely in code instead).

After reading "The iPhone Developer's Cookbook", i was feeling very left in the dark as most of that book relies on undocumented "tricks" that will likely become unsupported in future OS updates, and the code samples in that book are written in a very uncommon way and difficult to follow.
"Beginning iPhone Development" is the complete opposite. The book does mention that readers should have a firm grasp on Objective-C and the XCode IDE already, but the authors still take cautious steps in explaining everything that is being done (including some theory), especially when referring to new features of Objective-C 2.0. The code and writing style is crystal clear, and everything you need to know to get started is covered.
Check out the many positive reviews for this book on the American Amazon site if i haven't convinced you that this book is defiantly worth your time and money.

good, but ..., Mars 9 2009
I am on page 74 of what is almost 400 pages. The book is good, but author should not assume, that I will be fully familier with something I am learning on page 74 ... yet. More pictures are required, to confirm, that the code I have copied from the book will match with the output in the View box of Xcode. Otherwise I have to go back and forward in the book, so not to take a guess, that perhaps what I just did following the text from the book is exactly what I should have been doing.
Good book, but I think it could be better a bit with more pictures added to show what should I see on my computer screen, after the code from the book have been added.
cheers
