What Lengths Should a Family Go to Save a Life?
Anna was conceived as a bone marrow donor for her sister Kate. Originally it was just going to be taken from the placenta but when that didn't hold, Anna ended up being a long-term donor for Kate. Another Picoult Formula Book
Okay Jodi, you're getting dry! I have read all of Picoult's books, most of which have some sort of unique topic, a long lost love reunited, court room drama, various voices, and a twist of an ending. They are fun, fast reads. This one, had a super topic and tons of potential, but lost it on a few points. 1. Too many voices. No, I'm not dumb; I could follow the...

What Lengths Should a Family Go to Save a Life?, Nov. 12 2008

By the age of 13, Anna had undergone several surgeries and transfusions. Now she is expected to donate a kidney to her sister. Now she will draw a line in the sand. She will fight this.
What length should parents and siblings' go to save a family member's life? What is ethical, moral, and legal? What is right for the person who has the disease? Picoult does not give us the answers but leads us through the journey of what one family, lawyers, and the courts go through. In the end, we must decide.
I like how the narrative of the story switches from character to character so that we can get inside what each person is thinking and feeling. Picoult also throws in a few twists and turns to keep the story and plot going.
Several people have recommended this book to me. I must admit I hesitated, blowing it off as "chick lit". Boy was I wrong. This story is not superficial fluff; it deals with deep ethical issues and is well written.
This is the first Jodi Picoult book I have read, but it is certainly not the last. I highly recommend My Sister's Keeper!

Another Picoult Formula Book, Avril 27 2004
Okay Jodi, you're getting dry! I have read all of Picoult's books, most of which have some sort of unique topic, a long lost love reunited, court room drama, various voices, and a twist of an ending. They are fun, fast reads. This one, had a super topic and tons of potential, but lost it on a few points.1. Too many voices. No, I'm not dumb; I could follow the story. However, while some of the voices used are valid, others feel forced and are hard to really care about. Do we really need seven people telling the story? 2. Flat or unlikeable characters. I really didn't care too much about anyone in this book. 3. Huge stretches! (I'll leave it at that). 4. The worst ending ever! (No spoiler). I usually like her twists. I sort of predicted this one except that it came so late I began to doubt myself. However, it came out of nowhere and was too abrupt. Also, it was too simplistic. So, in short, Jodi picked a great topic, and it was still interesting; however, she fell short in many areas this time.

Unintentionally hilarious, Avril 7 2004
I laughed out loud. The greatest problem with this author is that she writes to try to pull a reader's heartstrings, instead of telling a story. When the plot's as convoluted as this, that's a real problem.Anna was born with a distinct purpose. To be a genetic donor for her sister Kate, who has a rare disease. At age thirteen, when her family schedules a kidney transplant without her consent, Anna takes them to court. Bad, unrealistic courtroom drama ensues (In a case like this, where she's basically accused of infringing upon Anna's human rights, her mother Sara shouldn't represent herself, even with a law degree), and honesty is sacrificed for more wooden metaphors. Picoult tries too hard with said metaphors. At one point, about to testify, Anna looks at her skirt, and notices that it is unraveling a bit. 'Perhaps I will unravel the whole thing' she says. As if we couldn't tell that the unraveling skirt was a symbol of the story about to be told. Either Picoult thinks we're all idiots, or she's trying way too hard to be deep. The story is told from multiple viewpoints; Anna, her mother, lawyers, etc. Instead of giving us everyone's feelings, it just leaves us confused. The author changes fonts to indicate another person speaking, as if that makes it easier. The result is that no character becomes truly fleshed out. Probably my biggest gripe is the fact that Picoult chooses to go for 'heart wrenching' melodramatic metaphor over honest emotion. Honesty wins every time, but apparently the author doesn't know that. The greatest example is the big surprise at the end of the book. I can't say what happens, but it relates to a choice Anna's mother makes, and how quickly she makes that choice. Any mother put in the position Sara finds herself in would behave in a different, more human manner. But no, Picoult chooses to 'try to make us cry', which resulted in me feeling utterly disgusted and wondering if any editor stopped to consider how ridiculous and inhuman the scene was. Considering this author is praised as someone who understands human thoughts and emotions, I was shocked. Tack on an obvious, schmaltzy ending with a very pat closing line and you've got yourself something wooden, unrealistic and seriously trying too hard. This isn't really bad writing. It's worse. It's an apparently capable writer passing on the meat of human emotions for lukewarm, metaphorically overladen erudite fluff. Very unappealing indeed.

Does not Live Up to Its Interesting Premise, Jui 2 2004
Par Un client
"My Sister's Keeper" is the first novel I have read by Jodi Picoult, and it could very well be the last. The premise of the novel is so interesting: a younger sibling is genetically "designed" so that she will be an acceptable donor to her older sister, who is very ill. As the girls age, there are medical, legal and emotional choices and consequences for the whole family. The story is told from the perspective of each character in the story, which is also an interesting and insightful way to deal with the subject matter. However, in spite of its promise in both subject matter and form, the novel does not deliver a pleasurable read or a satisfactory ending. At several points while I was reading, I thought: "Is this a soap, or this literature?" I felt like the book, which has lofty quotations which run the gamut from D.H. Lawrence to Shakespeare, has too many aspirations. The author does not let it be enough of a straight-up tug at your heartstrings family drama, and tries to endow it with more seriousness than the writing is really capable of pulling off. And the ending was just not appropriate: the reader is anticipating an ending that deals with the ethical consequences of the character's actions, and the author robs the reader of that experience. I couldn't recommend the novel on that basis alone.

Cue the violins for this Lifetime movie, Avril 19 2004
First rule of choosing a book: if the author's name is in larger type than the book's title, then it probably isn't very good. Jodi Picoult reached that point with her previous novel, Second Glance, and unfortunately this rule is holding true for her.Picoult's an excellent writer, but My Sister's Keeper is terrible. First she falls into her usual trap of assuming that her female target audience can't appreciate a thoughtful, well-told story without the inclusion of a romantic subplot - here it is even more tacked-on and gratuitous than in her other novels. Then she throws in a distracting gimmick - here, it is the lawyer's "shocking" medical secret, which is telegraphed from the beginning, has nothing to do with Anna's case, and after the buildup throughout the novel, is neatly deflated and disposed of after its "dramatic" use. Finally, she ends the book in such a way that all the chapters before are essentially pointless, as Picoult realizes she has painted herself into a legally correct but morally distasteful corner and needs a deus ex machina to fix the situation. I really wanted to like this book - Picoult has a gift for description and if at times her dialogue is wooden, her ideas are intriguing enough to make her books compelling, one-sitting reads, even with their usual 400+ page length. But as in the past, I've raced through her latest novel only to be disappointed and vaguely disgusted at the end.

A must read for any sister!, Nov. 9 2009
I picked up this book wanting to read it before watching the movie. I wasn't particularly interested but once I cracked the cover I found a story I could not put down. Jodi's writing makes you feel like your their, and part of the crisis. You'll laugh and most certainly cry, but this book is very much worth the read!! Definatly on my top 10 favourite books list. You wont be dissapointed!

felt it was real., Nov. 8 2009
The book was good. A real tearjerker. I did find it distracting though that each chapter was from a different characters point of view. Though it might be because i have a 2 year old and can only read a few pages before I hear "MOM! MOM! MOM!" So every time I picked up the book I had to remember whos point of view I was reading from. The last half of the book Though I read in peace and got through the entire thing and enjoyed it. I realize that having each characters point of view made the book more real. From the outside you have this overbearing controlling mother, but when you are in her head you see that she feels she needs to be strong for her family. Or you have a young troubled boy who is destructive, rude and rebellious, but when you are in his head you see that he is searching for the attention he hasn't had for most of his life. We should remember this in life.

Surprisingly Good, Aoû 2 2009
I don't usually allow myself, with the almost non-existent time I have to read for leisure, to read fiction, especially without anyone's recommendation, and especially this genre of fiction. But I had a good time reading the book; kept me interested and wanting to read more.
