I think that as a parent, "body science" is a great book to have around for those questions that you may not have the words for. also, my kids wanted to look at iot. the pictures were intriguing and the text simple.

I bought this book based on reviews and boy am I glad I did! When I explained to my daughter that I have a book on BODY SCIENCE, the reception I got was much different if I had said otherwise. The book starts off in a classroom where the nurse comes in to discussing biological changes in puberty to both sexes, and the kids responding like kids would (even saying "YUCK!" which is what my child said as well when I was reading it to her). I highly recommend this book for 6-9 year olds who have questions about "whats this?". It is a discussion starter on its basic level. For girls only: I'd also recommend "The Care and Keeping of You" which discusses how & why to wash, what changes will be happening soon during puberty, how to size & select a bra, etc. A little more fluffy than Body Science, but I believe they complement each other. My kids (6-year-old girl & 7-year-old boy) have recently been asking questions about sex and their bodies. They have also been making a bunch of body-part comments. So I thought it was time to answer their questions but I wasn't sure what I should tell them. I chose this book because it was rated for their age group on the Amazon.com website.I am very happy with the book. It does a really good job of presenting the material in an honest and clininical manner yet still manages to stay interesting to kids. I believe it made my "talk" with the kids so much easier. I actually have seen the kids leaf through the book on their own at times too so I know it caught their attention/interest. I highly recommend this book!

I was very impressed with this book! It was perfect to explain and identify "private parts" and how babies are made to my 7 year old. It used proper "scientific" names and illustrated diagrams that made it easy to compare similarities and differences between boys and girls.

Though as parents we might have the best of intentions to educate our children appropriately, it is difficult to know HOW to introduce sexuality subjects in a manner that meets the thought processes and maturity of children in primary grades. I read this book about 18 months ago to my then 5 and 7 year old boys. It was great to not have to flub around for words and answers - I was just able to read the book and allow the kids time to look at the pictures (while I took deep breaths). Not only was I overwhelmingly impressed with the book at the time, but since then the communication is free flowing between the boys and I. They know and do ask their parents whatever they want, and we have a platform with which to build on more complex talks as they age. I really feel comfortable that we've built a strong communication foundation in our family, and I thank this book for allowing me to build the cornerstone (without totally embarrasing myself & my kids with whatever I would've come up with on my own!)If I ever meet Meg Hickling I'm going to give her a gigantic hug! |
