5.0 out of 5 stars Decolonizing the mind with a warrior's spirit., July 7 2011
This review is from: Wasáse: Indigenous Pathways of Action and Freedom (Paperback)
I loved this book. I have been trying to decolonize myself for the last couple of years, but I have struggled without a real sense of how to go about it. This book is filled with solid suggestions on how to decolonize ourselves that are realistic and contemporary. The main qualities of a warrior are courage and integrity, and Taiaiake shows us, through solid suggestions and examples from the people he interviews, how to go about this decolonizing process. He asserts that the most important thing we can do is be contentious in our everyday lived existence in order to stand up against colonialism. This may include saying things that are blunt and do not protect the feelings of those who are racist or merely trapped in their "Western" colonized thinking. We must have the courage stand up, not just against the "system", but to each individual who holds white, arrogant, colonial attitudes. We must also examine ourselves to remove our own internalized Western values and replace those with Indigenous values, for example: spirituality, community, nonmaterialist, ecoconscious, not self-centered.

I love they way this book is written. It has "spark" and tenacity and that's what more people need in their life - something to be dedicated to and something to belive in!!!
