Dazzling and Unforgettable...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sweet Savage Love (Mass Market Paperback)
Rosemary Rogers' clear, precise writing style is a pleasure to approach in this stunning romance novel, full of adventure and passion. I just love Ginny, she belongs in the pantheon of fictional goddesses alongside Scarlett O'Hara -- so feisty, sexy, and FUNNY! I just adored her...this book is one that will leave you breathless, not just for the steamy scenes between Steve and Ginny, but also the historical intrigue that envelops them...a treat not to be missed. I am telling all my friends about this great book --- my 2004 summertime read!!!!!

I cut my teeth on Rosemary Rogers (along with Bertrice Small, Laurie McBain, Woodiwiss and Cartland). I really don't care for the modern romance novels. They're too sweet and predictable. I read this back in the late 70s and have never forgotten the steamy scenes in this book. The scene with Steve and Ginny under the wagon should be studied by all romance writers! Besides that, the plot is so not PC or predictable. I wish the industry make room for books like this. The fact that it's so popular all these years later should tell you something.

The first HOT historical romance and not PC,

I'm going to date myself. I first read Sweet Savage Love when it was first published in approx. 1972. The times were a changin, things in the story acceptable then are out of favor now. So when you read this treasure of a story please keep this in mind. That being said, Steve and Ginny are a couple that are survivors in every sense of the word. Individually they are put through the tortures' of the damned. They meet and part meet and part and finally meet at the end. In each meeting they come to care for the other a little more and more each time. They are being made stronger as individuals and the fabric of their love is being woven with steel fibers and not cotton that will tear under adversity or weaken and rot over time. They can finally overcome their mutual pride and admit they love each other in the end. I've explained this simply, but the story is not, it is rich and complex. Believe me when it was first published it was a very hot historical romance. Start with this first Steve and Ginny story and be sure to read the others in the series. They hold up over time, but they are not twenty-first century PC. If your sensibilities need modern PC to enjoy a story--look elsewhere.

Nothing sweet about this story,

This review is from: Sweet Savage Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was 700 pages of misery! I truly wish Rogers had spared us some of the absolutely ghastly episodes in this book. Not only did the hero and heroine spend the book hating each other, but the characters were dragged through the worst fate I can imagine. Episodes of rape, forced prostitution, and horrid beatings all occur. This is not a book anyone should read if they are seeking to escape the concerns of real life, the tale experienced here is surly worse and not a place I care to escape to. I will never read this book again; the only reason I finished it was that I could not bear to leave the characters in such misery! This tale is savage indeed!

It's a changing world... This was written a long time ago!,

I love this book and I have for a long time. I've looked through the other reviews in here and I realize how much the world of romance novels has changed over the 25 years I've been reading them. No, this isn't a pleasant story at times. It's not Cinderella rewritten for the year 2000 like so many romances are. Many people complain about the title -- at that point in time (and maybe this still happens) the publishers had a list of romance novel names and they just grabbed the next one on the list that sort of fit. In this case it happened to be Sweet Savage Love. This isn't always a nice story, but it has very real characters who aren't predictable in the least. Very brutal things happen to them and they still love each other. I've always felt that was the point of the story and what made the characters so real and appealing. No matter what happened, they managed to forgive each other and continue to love each other. If you are looking for sweet, predictable romance, this isn't it. If you're looking for something a little different from the romance of 2004, you've found it. Just be ready for a heroine who is really abused by the bad guys (and sometimes the good guy) and who has to rescue herself and fight for what she wants. Then be ready for a hero who really isn't nice sometimes and has a life beyond the heroine -- including other romatic involvements that aren't just 'misunderstandings'.

sweet savage love took away the heart of a 12years old nausheen. for 8 years i read this story almost daily and dreamed of steve and ginny. they became my true friends. they cheered me up in my depressing mood. steve and ginny became the stars whom i worshiped. i loved steve so much that i wanted him to be happy with ginny and whenever they parted i felt for them. in my prays i want them to be together forever. all this sounds silly but this is how i find this book. thanks rosemary rogers for this gift. they will remain in my memories forever.

A Waste of My Money!!,
This review is from: Sweet Savage Love (Audio Cassette)
I bought the audiobook recording for Rosemary Rogers Sweet Savage Love and it is an abridged audio not unabridged as listed, it is only on one cassette tape and only about 90 minutes in length but even with this very condensed audio recording I could still tell that it wasn't a very pleasant story and it has some extremely unlikeable characters and this audiobook was just not good enough for the keeper shelf and it was a waste of my money!

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK I WARN YOU!,

Alright, first let me say that I was looking up a good romance book set on a friend's opinion. I came across Rosemary Rogers "Sweet Savage Love." I read the reviews, many said that this book was great, the love scenes were a bit brutal at times, and that Ginny's prostitution was unsuitbale. GIVE ME A BREAK! First off, let me say that Ginny was KIDNAPPED by Steve Morgan against her will. Steve considered her his plaything and nothing more. He continually plays with her heart and her body and feeling no remorse. They get married and i swear, he has sex with atleast 10 other women, while Ginny gets raped about 10 times defending Steve. When Steve finds out about this, he goes on to call her a whore, about 30 times in the whole book, even though she stood up for him! On their wedding night he was off fiddling with a slave girl! Not to mention there are so many questions i have. There are people in the stories brought in, babies, friends, women, and in the next minute they drop of out the scene and you have no idea where they went. Steve IS NOT hero, and this IS NOT a love story. If you want a love story, an actual ROMANCE, then please find other authors.

exciting but unpleasant,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sweet Savage Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was definitely full of suspense, action, and intrigue. However I think the author went past the point of the extreme. I have a healthy sense of morbid curiosity but even I was offended by the extended descriptions of rape, violence, and forced prostitution. And I'm not talking about between Steve and Ginny, I mean Ginny's career in prostitution. I think another reviewer hit the nail on the head when she said that obviously Ms. Rogers has never been forced to do something so unpleasant against her will. Reading about it in such detail made me sick to my stomach, wishing that escapade would be over soon. Why go into such detail about the times and ways in which Ginny was raped but only subtly allude to Steve being raped in the mine prison? Afraid of offending readers? HA! Ms. Rogers further alienated this reader by making the love story completely unbelievable. I can understand the passionate sex (I'm a big fan of bodice ripping), but love?? I don't think so. He did nothing to inspire Ginny's love except abuse and mistreat her, no matter how fantastic the sex was. I was terribly disappointed that by the end of the book I still found no reason for Ginny to love Steve, he was a horrible hero. I find myself interested in reading the next books (my morbid curiosity at work again) in the series to find out if their relationship ever develops, but I don't care to spend so many unpleasant hours reading the author's view of "passion and excitement".

VERY GOOD BOOK,

This book was very good, in my opinion... rogers put love, deceit, hate, courage, and adoration all in one... all the while adding a historical edge to it. It kept me intrigued and never left me bored. I had no desire to put this book down. I even read it twice! You will fall in love with the characters and some parts may even touch your heart. Very good book. I would recommend it to anyone.
