I found this book while staying at a B&B in Newfoundland, and it was such a wonderful read that I had to run out and buy a copy to take home with me. With wonderful insights into the people of Newfoundland the authors use powerful images and the words of the Newfoundlanders themselves to tell the stories of the place. Alternately powerful and fun, this book is a must for anyone wishing to understand the lives of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and their place in history and Canada.

I have purchased four of these now - one for myself to show tourists when I drive cross-Newfoundland and Labrador tours and three for gifts. The recipients really enjoy the beautiful photos and commentary and will leave it out on the coffee table for others to enjoy instead of putting it away in a cupboard or on a shelf full of other books.
I will buy more, no doubt, for gifts.

Good book to know about a certain part of the population in Newfoundland. But this book won't be useful for travellers to know what to see.

The photographs in this book are far from good.

I enjoyed this book so much primarily because it is written and illustrated so well, you can actually sense yourself in Newfoundland and gain so much perspective as to how they lived.

After reading This Marvellous Terrible Place....we've learned to appreciate the hard lives of our Maritime brethren. It was a wonderful book that brought laughter, tears & deep feeling of compassion to the hardy souls whose stories we read. We're from the Prairies, and will make our second visit to Nl. this Fall. We simply cannot get enough of this wonderful part of Canada. I fell in love with this part of the world ever since first reading Random Passage....and now this book. Amazing and wonderful and highly recommended.
