My husband brought this gem back for me after a recent ski vacation to the Kootneys. Seems like a raw deal, he got to ski and I get a cookbook. No way! This is the best cookbook ever! I cook a lot and have many cookbooks but I have never been so pleased with so many recipes. Nice to look at, easy to use and delicious meals in no time. My best buddies who love to ski and cook will all be getting this book for upcoming birthdays. The Chili Con Carne is to die for, not to mention the Torta Rustica. Bravo Shelley Adams. This year we are planning another ski trip. This time I am going and you can bet I will be skiing and eating at Whitewater Mountain. As for my husband, he can't believe he got to ski, have a wife whom was pleased with his gift AND he continues to enjoying Whitewater meals in our cozy kitchen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Jan 18 2007
This review is from: Whitewater Cooks: Pure, Simple and Real Creations from the Fresh Tracks Cafe (Paperback)
I've never eaten at Whitewater but spend my winters in nearby Rossland BC. I've noticed that there is a regional "Kootenay cuisine" and this cookbook is a great example of it. Its kind of an ultra glorified hippie cuisine unlike food anywhere else. There are a lot of asian and mideastern influences, tahini, soy etc. Also lots of vegetarian influences though now you find meat everywhere. It may have developed out of the tree planting camps where the cooks found the old vegetarian fare just wasn't quite enough for a group of hard working tree planters.

My husband and I have tried quite a few recipes from this book and highly recommend it. Lots of intense flavors, interesting food.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book - your life will change!, Mar 5 2011
This review is from: Whitewater Cooks: Pure, Simple and Real Creations from the Fresh Tracks Cafe (Paperback)
This is simply the best cookbook available (just as good as the other one this author wrote). The food is easy to make, full of flavour, and always pleases everyone at my table. I have dozens of cookbooks and love to cook, but this book is the only one I ever use anymore. Words cannot describe how great the book is - just buy it, start cooking, and thank me later.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Go-To Cookbooks, Mar 14 2010

I have family who lives in Nelson and have visited Whitewater Ski Resort many times - the food is always ridiculously good, so it just made sense to buy this cookbook. It is a bit more expensive than other cookbooks I have, but this cookbook has quickly become one of my favorites and I often buy it for gifts for people. I've made many of the recipes - the Ymir Curry Bowl, Lemony Lentil Soup, the Glory Bowl and the Potato Salad with Mustard Dill Dressing to name a few of my favorites (the sauce for the Glory Bowl is addictive and I'm constantly trying to come up with new ways to use it) - all have been delicious! The Whitewater Veggie Burgers are also a favorite - but with the Famous Burger Sauce, it sends them over the edge! The veggie burger recipe makes a lot, but they freeze beautifully. I just purchased the second cookbook, Whitewater Cooks at Home, so once I've made a couple recipes, I'll review that as well. I wouldn't say any of the recipes are dinner on the table in 10 minutes, but are great for weekends or when you have a bit more time to prepare.

5.0 out of 5 stars My FAVOURITE cookbook ever!, July 30 2010
This review is from: Whitewater Cooks: Pure, Simple and Real Creations from the Fresh Tracks Cafe (Paperback)
I live in the Kootenays and I am an avid cook. I consistently try new recipes weekly and have compiled a literal library of cookbooks and cooking magazines. This is by far my favourite cookbook with incredibly delicious dishes. The first dish I tried was the Torta Rustica...a layered dish of tortillas, roasted vegetables and sauces that knocked my socks off. I begged my friend for the recipe and when he showed me the book I rushed straight out and purchased it at the local store that carries it. I have since noticed that it turns up in the kitchens of almost all of the locals here in town. The reviews are always rave. I was employed as the cook at a local backcountry ski lodge for a week, and the baggage allowance on the helicopter in was very limited. I was limited to two cookbooks so I chose this one and another of my own that is a compilation of my fav recipes over the years. Upon arrival at the rustic lodge I discovered that it was one of the few cookbooks that the regular cook already had up there for reference!!!!

Don't hesitate. Buy it and then buy it for everyone you know when you are looking for a perfect gift. The secret is out so we might as well shout it from the rooftops.

A proud Kootenay Cook cooking proudly from a Kootenay Cookbook!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and Delicious Food!, Jan 1 2008

I've made about eight or ten of the recipes in this cookbook, and they have all been easy to make and absolutely delicious! The recipes are uncomplicated -- they generally require only common household ingredients or ones that are easy to find, and preparation is simple and quick. Despite their simplicity, however, these recipes are good enough to impress at a dinner party. I'm a fan of cookbooks from restaurants, as the recipes have been tested in "real world" conditions. Whitewater Cooks is one of my favourite restaurant cookbooks.

My wife got this book for Christmas but I can't put it down. The pictures get my mouth watering and the recipes get me in the kitchen. I've only tried a few so far but they all look great and if the ones I've made are any indication then they will be.
