Taking Stock: Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education,
By EG (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Taking Stock: Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (Paperback)
I am a contract instructor at an Ontario university and found this book to be invaluable. What it does is take research and translate it into easily understood concepts. No, it is not an instruction book - it's better. What it does is make you THINK about how you are teaching and how you should be teaching. It helps you to understand how students learn (which I know from my faculty meetings very few instructor/Phd's understand) and how you can format your teaching to further the goal of helping students to learn the concepts in your course - regardless of the discipline.By the end of the 2nd chapter I had already realized that I needed to change my way of teaching concepts in my course that have, for years, created a stumbling block for my students - and I came up with a creative way of doing so. No, the idea on how to teach the concepts came from another source - but the fact that I needed to even consider them and make my teaching more creative to overcome the difficulty came directly from my reading of this book. |
