Literally could not put this book down. A must read for every Canadian. Informative yet entertaining, heart-rending yet hilarious. Whether for or against Canadian participation in Afghanistan, this book will not disappoint.

I thought this book was very interesting and provided a different outlook on the mission in Afganistan from someone who has been there. It is true that the media usually only report deaths when they occur and little is mentioned of the successes during the mission - thus the importance of the FOB Doc book.

This book is amazing; it not only inspires and make us proud of what our brave soldiers face out there but it educates. I am grateful that this book was written for us. Thank you.

FOB DOC review,

Fob Doc is written by Captain Ray Wiss MD, a highly regarded Emergency Physician from Sudbury, ON. (General Hillier wrote the forward.) Dr. Wiss has taught Emergency ultrasound to thousands of Canadian ER docs. This book is the end result of the diary he kept detailing his time as a military doctor in active combat zones in Afghanistan. He tells stories of his comrades, of patients that he has cared for and gives an eyewitness account of the lives of our soldiers and the average Afghani citizen. Whether you agree with the mission or not, this book is still a very worthy read. As Ray says "what makes us different from the Taliban is that we are free to discuss our opinions and disagree without having to fear for our safety if we don't agree". Read this book, discuss Canada's role in Afghanistan and try to imagine how wretched are the lives of the Afghani's. Whether we can help them, I'm not sure, but at least I understand what our military is trying to accomplish.

As a doctor who served in Afghanistan, I find this a very interesting read. I found that it was a story superficially, yet well told; I also find that I am ever explaining why we have gone to Afghanistan (no, there is NO oil) and why we do what we're doing; this books explains it at a very simple level, a level that all Canadians ought to understand before speaking any further on the subject, far too infrequent, I am afraid.

Captain Mills, with his diary style book, gets the reader into the mind of the soldiers operating on Forward Observation Bases, within reason. His excellent description of the day to day life and challenges of an infantry company and the medics that support it provides an insight into the day to day life of these young soldiers. Capt Mills spends a lot of time describing what Afghans want and what the Taliban do to stop it. His diary speaks directly to the reader. I found it difficult to put the book down.
