This review is from: Don't Bother Me MomI'm Learning!: How Computer and Video Games are Preparing Your Kids for 21st Century Success - and How You Can Help! (Paperback)
Even though my husband and I are both gamers (him all of his life, me more recently), I used to struggle with my homeschooling son's passion for video games. I went from banning them on weekdays to evenings only to time limits or earned time with chores, etc, etc, etc. I began taking a closer look at ALL of my parenting philosophies when I decided to fully switch over to unschooling. This book is congruent in thought with a lot of the unschooling philosophies and also gave me a great new perspective on my son's video game love. I started to pay closer attention to what he would say or ask about things related to the games. I very quickly observed that he was learning amazing things from games. Whole conversations and interests have cropped up becuase of gaming. His vocabulary has booned because of terminology used in games. Some examples of things that he has asked me about:

* momentum
* gravity and anti-gravity
* guilds, leagues, clans
* elements
* friction
* honour, justice, revenge
* villians
* tyranny
* sanity and insanity
* player vs. player (PVP) and player vs. environment (PVE)
* Teamwork
* animal habitats
* War
* Slavery
* So much more!!!

Some fantastic games that he (almost 8) plays and learns A LOT from are:
All Mario games
Sim City
Civilization V
Heroes of Might and Magic
Pokemon series
Megaman series
Ninja Gaiden
Donkey Kong (2010 version)
Guitar Hero and Rock Band series
DC Universe Online (an MMORPG -- term explained in the book)
Roller Coaster Tycoon
Black & White 2
