A classic action movie that makes Kill Bill a comedy,
By
This review is from: Robocop (Widescreen) (DVD)
The 1987 classic Robocop is one of my all time favorite movies next to Scarface(1983), First Blood(1982), Goodfellas(1990), Braveheart(1995), The Exorcist(1973), Animal House(1978) and The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie(1979). When I first saw this movie in 1988 when I was 12, I was in for a time of my life. As for the first Robocop(forget the sequels), Old Detroit has become a violent wonderland of criminal activity. New officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) and Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen) are partners in a police force under siege from OCP, a company that wants to turn Old Detroit into a Metropolis kind of place. Whilst pursuing particularly bloodthirsty and disgusting badguys, led by the reprehensible Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith), whom had some of the funniest lines ever uttered by a villain in film, Murphy is captured, tortured, shot full of holes and killed. This scene is rather disturbing to watch for those who don't like violence. After his death, Murphy becomes ROBOCOP. Murphy now has a mechanical body and becomes a walking weapon of mass destruction! He in initially goes out to clean up the streets and uphold the law. However, the scientists forgot that he was human and Robocop subsequently has a flashback to the night that his human form was killed and is later haunted by memories of his wife and son. The nightmare sequence sets up one of the best revenge films I've ever seen next to the first First Blood. ROBOCOP then finds out the sinister secrets of OCP's #2 man (Ronny Cox) after assaulting Clarence and must do battle with the ED-209, an earlier robotic crimefighter design with heavy-duty guns and missiles. The rest of the film is great too. I can't give more away, you have to watch. Highly recommended!

MANUFACTURING GONE WRONG ON DISC TWO,
By bulog (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Robocop (20th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (DVD)
The second disc in this set is an exact copy of the first disc! there is NO supplements, no uncut version, nothing, its disc one again with all the art for disc two printed on it. I wish I never bought this because of the return policy of opened software (games programs and DVD's) at my local Future Shop, but hopefully they do a disc exchange program like they did with the Back to the Future discs and Ultimate Superman (which I bought at the same time and ironically had all correct discs in there!)

2nd Disc is Wrong: Do Not Buy!,
By
This review is from: Robocop (20th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (DVD)
The 2nd disc is wrong (it's the same as the first, despite appearances), though only in Canada: wait until the error is fixed before ordering, or order from the States. It's strictly a problem with the Canadian pressing. You've been warned!

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!,
By Al "Coholic" (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Robocop (20th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (DVD)
When I first heard about this I got excited. When I picked it up. I was very disappointed. The first disc which features the original theatrical release is good. Disc 2. Is the problem. It has the same features as disc 1 and the movie is the same as disc 1.If you own the ROBOCOP TRILOGY or the CRITERION VERSION. Keep them. Don't sell them. Those versions contain the extended versions with good features. Hopefully they'll realize the mistake they made and correct it. This is an insult to hardcore fans of this sci fi classic.

Great Film! Bad Port,

This review is from: Robocop (Version française incluse) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I am not criticizing the film. Robocop will always be a Sci-Fi classic, but the port to BDR is so poor. The company didnt put much effort into remastering this great film. I hope they come up with a new edition soon.

Criterion loses another contract! Woohoo! You can get this DVD for around $20, and it's a real bargain. First off, the DVD itself is immaculate. It has just about everything from the criterion release, and some new features as well. It's packaged in a steel book style case, like Ong Bak. That can be a blessing or a curse, depending on how many steelbook movies you already have! In addition, I have had two copies of this DVD and they have both been Canadian versions, and they do have the uncut version of the movie. The error that duplicated the first disc appears to have been fixed. The movie itself...what can I say about Robocop. It's one of my all time favorite movies, I consider it a modern day "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". Like that movie, it has a mix of just about every genre; comedy, violence, action, social commentary, etc. It's also as cheesy at times, but what a classic. Do not judge Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece by the sequels, this movie is the only 'Cop that matters. I think this movie is one of the top 50 movies released in the 80's, and it's on my personal top 5 list!

ROBOFLOP !!,

This review is from: Robocop (20th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (DVD)
I went to my local Best Buy today to check out DVD's and came across two separate releases of "Robocop" for the exact same price. The first was a bare bones release containing one disc and the second was the 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition with two discs. It was an easy decision to make and the wrong one as well. I went with the 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition containing two discs because it was supposed to be a special edition and the price was definitely right.First off I have to say that the 5.1 digital sound and video transfer are truly amazing and fans won't be disappointed with this version. Unfortunately the fun ended for me after I watched the first disc. With great anticipation I loaded the second disc into my player to watch the special features and quickly realized it was the exact same material as the first disc even though the disc artwork was completely different. I don't have to tell you that "Robocop" quickly turned into "Roboflop" and it left me bitterly disappointed with 20th Century Fox and their less than stellar effort. I was really looking forward to watching the Villains of Detroit featurette as well as the other bonus features, but the only villains in this release were 20th Century Fox for really screwing up and Best Buy for selling inferior DVD's or old stock.. I've always liked Peter Weller ever since I first saw him in the cult classic "Buckaroo Banzai" and thought he was perfect in "Robocop" and that's why I give the movie itself five stars for its fierce but violent action. After this two disc calamity I have to give 20th Century Fox and Best Buy two stars for being two incompetent screw ups. It appears that reputable companies like Amazon are selling the correct two disc version and other retailers like Best Buy are not, so Buyer Beware! I wish "Robocop" could smash his way into 20th Century Fox Studios and execute his brand of justice on them.

Disc 2 now fixed for Canada!,

This review is from: Robocop (20th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (DVD)
UPDATE FOR CANADIANS: I've recently received my 2-disc set through Amazon.ca (11/26/07), and the issue with the duplicated DVD on the 2nd disc has been fixed.Overall, this is a great collection packed with informative special features, and it's a worthy collection to any sci-fi library. Those with the OOP Criterion Collection DVD will still want to have this limited edition set in its sleek, metal tin with standout graphics. Sound and video quality is excellent throughout.
