5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Truthful
Just wanted to say what a great bear attack book. I hike in bear country, and it's always helpful to be reminded what does happen. Also, just wanted to comment that I personally know Joe Heimer, in the story "Warm Spell", and that the author's account of this attack was relayed in the book exactly as Joe told of the account to me, so I have to believe that each...

2.0 out of 5 stars Please don't hurt the bears.
This book is the least interesting of the three of this theme I recently read. The author seems more interested in pushing his bear rights agenda than simply telling a story. He blames humans for most of the attacks. We are also told repeatedly that bear spray is the most effective method of stopping a bear attack. (Never mind that in a few of the tales the spray...

This review is from: Mark of the Grizzly: True Stories of Recent Bear Attacks and the Hard Lessons Learned (Paperback)
This book is the least interesting of the three of this theme I recently read. The author seems more interested in pushing his bear rights agenda than simply telling a story. He blames humans for most of the attacks. We are also told repeatedly that bear spray is the most effective method of stopping a bear attack. (Never mind that in a few of the tales the spray proved absolutely worthless.). In all but two or three of the stories we are reminded how guns would have been absolutely useless in preventing the attack. In the few stories where a gun saved the attack victims' life, the author simply ends the story with no commentary. The first tale, I thought was completely rediculous. I got the feeling that the two female victims wanted to go out into the woods to give the attacking bear a big hug, after all, they were trespassing in the bears' back yard. Overall, I guess I enjoyed this book, but I was expecting to read about real-life adventures, not a bunch of reasons humans should tolerate bear attacks. If you are of the type that blame man for all that is wrong with the world, you may enjoy this book. If you want exciting tales of animal attacks without the editorializing, try one of Larry Kaniut"s books, such as "Danger Stalks the Land".

Also, just wanted to comment that I personally know Joe Heimer, in the story "Warm Spell", and that the author's account of this attack was relayed in the book exactly as Joe told of the account to me, so I have to believe that each of the stories were researched and written with the same attention to detail. Great for anyone going into bear country!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifying., April 8 2002

This review is from: Mark of the Grizzly: True Stories of Recent Bear Attacks and the Hard Lessons Learned (Paperback)
I first saw this book in the hands of my Dad a few weeks ago. Then in my older brothers. They both were very intrested in this book so i asked my mother to read it to me. I think i may never leave our family ranch and hed off into the forest again. Bears killing humans and eating them may not scare my dad and brother but it sure scared the pants off of me. I always thought that all bears were always cute and playful, who whould have thought. Scott McMillion did a great job on this book. It takes a very good or very funny writer to get me into a book and this man has done it. I applued him(i hope i spelt that right). Even though it may be quite some time before i will want to see a bear again.

It takes a skilled writer to keep me so absorbed in a book. I applaud McMillion for knowing the right bear book hadn't been written yet and that he could do it. I also appreciate the knowledge I picked up about bear behavior - never look 'em in the eye!

I purchased the book this fall at Yellowstone. I began reading, and read straight through without putting it down. I gained a healthy respect for these awesome animals, and a great reverence for one of the mightiest creations on this earth.

This book is a real page turner, facinating the reader with each horrifying story. If you travel on foot in grizzly country, this book will keep you alert and on your toes the next time that you venture out. Not a stupid "When Animals Attack" piece of sensationalized garbage, this book educates on the possible causes of bear attacks. Written from a conservationist, but by no means tree-hugging or bleeding heart, point of view, the book inspires a deep respect and admiration - and a health dose of fear - for these powerful animals.

This book opened my mind. I live in Black bear country, never gave it a thought to those magnificent animals until I read this book. "Wanna be terrified? get this book and read it at MIDNIGHT."

The Canadian.

After reading Stephan Hererro's book "Bear Attacks," this was like a follow up. Despite the gravity of each attack I felt the author never blamed the bear; neither did the victims for that matter. I have been to many of the places described in the book so it had a special significance for me and my family. In each attack there was a lesson that the victims shared through their interviews or hidden in their stories. For me that is why I read this type of book; to learn and possibly prevent making the same mistakes. I would highly recommend this book for anyone hiking or camping in grizzly territory.
