3.0 out of 5 stars Keep an Open Mind when reading this book
It's good to keep an open mind when reading this book. As Ms. Hay delves into the spiritual so born again's may not appreciate it. Lot's of good info, if you can get past some of her beliefs that you may not share.

Still in all, it seems to be a positive book with good intent.

5.0 out of 5 stars You must first believe that the mind controls your health, Jun 13 2004
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life Gift Edition (Perfect Paperback)
My journey through bad health has been going on now for eight years, cost me over $100,000, and my condition has been hurt more by the MDs who claimed they could fix it -- than was helped by them. Enough was enough. Doctors are more concerned about maxing their fees, assembly-lining as many patients per hour through their offices -- anything -- to overcome the hold that insurance companies presently have on their standard of living. And their patients -- are the losers to such practices. If you are to benefit from Louise Hay's book, you must accept that there is a mind/body connection to health -- a belief that our minds cause our colds as well as our cancers. That past traumas -- or simply bad beliefs -- have sufficient emotional impact on us -- "zapping" us -- into negative thought patterns that lodge somewhere in our bodies, wear us down, cause us to be hurt, in pain, paralyzed with fear, frightened into intertia -- in effect, our bodies to break down into -- dis-ease. That is the premise of this book. Should you believe it? After eight years of seeing top MDs to alternative practitioners, I tired of feeding "the healthcare mill" that makes MDs wealthy -- and me increasingly disabled. I am now fighting my way back to wellness -- exploring many authors based on their mind/body teachings, and using their techniques. My belief that I can get well is what is making me well. The proof is clear -- by the progress I have made.

This is the book you really need to read if it's the first time you are going to read how to heal your life. It's a beautiful experience; reading it is like a discovery, the discovery of a light that will show you how you can do to improve your life. It is beautifully written and it is the one I can strongly recommend to read in the first place. After reading it, you'll become a fan of Hay. At least, that's what happened to me. Now I have all her books and I've turned into a more relaxed and happy person. It doesn't tell you how you have to live, it tells you that to be happy or to have positive thoughts is your decision. You can choose between being a happy person or being a person who just thinks about all the past events which weren't good or happy for you. Trust me: the best book ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Psychological Side of Healing, Nov 7 2008
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life Gift Edition (Perfect Paperback)
You Can Heal Your Life is all about using your thoughts to fix the problems in your life. What kind of problems? Well, the book specifically looks into healing some pretty major life areas: relationships, work, success, prosperity, and your body. But wait a minute, did I say the book is using thoughts to heal your body? What's up with that? Is that even possible? Well, after reading this book, I think in many cases, yes, it is possible.

While I think it is the way to go to treat things such as an acute appendicitis with surgery, fractures with a cast, and pneumonia with antibiotics, there are many conditions where conventional medicine blatently falls short. Of course I'm talking about health problems such as migraines, backaches, or stomach ulcers- you know, those kinds of nagging disorders where we all know that stress/mental processes DO play a role. But while few would argue that psychological factors can cause an ulcer, what about more serious conditions such as, say, arthritis?

Well it may not be too far fetched. Consider this. One study of 1,198 subjects found that only 56% of men with SEVERE knee arthritis had any pain (Lawrence 1966). Another study X-rayed 84 seventy-nine year-olds and 76 eighty-five year-olds and found that only 43% of them with SEVERE knee arthritis had any pain complaints (Bagge 1991). There are plenty more examples in the scientific literature, but obviously there two alone show us that there is NO clear-cut association between severe knee arthritis and pain.

ON THE OTHER HAND, when one looks at the relationship between psychological variables and knee arthritis, one does see a clear association. For instance, one study looked at 65 patients (ages 55 to 87) with hip and/or knee arthritis. X-rays, pain, depression levels, anxiety levels, coping styles, and functional impairment were all assessed. The findings? Researchers discovered that the severity of one's arthritis showed little relationship to pain, BUT, psychological variables were strong predictors of who had pain and how impaired they were (Summers 1988).

Along the same lines, Salaffi examined 61 women (ages 51-79) with knee arthritis. Here again, results showed that how disabled someone was, was more related to psychological variables than how bad their knee looked on an X-ray film. Interestingly, both anxiety and depression WERE important predictors of pain (Salaffi 1991). Any one conducting a literature review on Medline will find more such examples IF you're looking for them. While I used knee arthritis as an example, there are MANY more studies on other health problems with similar findings.

All of this should be causing us to raise an eyebrow. The literature is telling us that it is far from being clear cut that things like bad knee arthritis ALWAYS mean pain. And the research is also giving us clues that the mind and our thought processes definitely play a role. So the question now becomes, if bad thought patterns can play a role in health problems such as arthritis, why not in other diseases such as cancer, as the book suggests?

You be the judge. I found that the main value in this book was getting me to look at how our thinking does influence the functioning of our bodies- as well as our life in general. Note that I'm NOT saying that you can think yourself well all the time either.

Remember that while Louise Hay did change her thought patterns and was cured of cancer, she has also written that she used other alternative treatments as well, such as foot reflexology and colon therapy (Chapter 16). Therefore, my advice is to look at ALL the options when dealing with a health problem, one MAJOR one being changing your mental patterns (which is the what the book does a nice job of addressing). And for this reason, I can recommend this book to anyone who needs physical healing or otherwise. Other alternative healing books of interest include The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution. Thank you Louise Hay!

I have a gift edition of the book. And it was one of the first self-improvement books I ever read. I am happy that I picked Louise Hay. She is a Master in making people feel great about themselves and cut criticism and megative thoughts that often creep into our minds and try to make us feel miserable. I can tell you that after reading the book you start to work on your mind and finally you change your life. It has exercises and affirmations that do significant improvements in your life and even in your looks. If you buy a gift edition the book of Meditations is really good. A meditation on headache almed and treated mine right after I read it several times. And illustrations... You can buy the book only to see amazing work of Joan Perrin Falquet.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book Keeps Its Promise to Heal Your Life!, April 2 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life Gift Edition (Perfect Paperback)
I'm 48, and have been looking for this book my whole life!
I, like many others, including the author, had a horrible childhood. I had parents who basically ignored me or appeared to hate me. There was emotional abuse and alcoholism. I have been struggling to pull my life together my entire adulthood, and have failed.

I've read a lot of self-help books, and I watch Oprah. I've been to a couple of therapists, who never used the word worthy or really focused on the problem. Until recently, I didn't even know that my failure in life was due to feeling unworthy!

There are a lot of books out there, but how many actually tell you HOW TO FEEL WORTHY? I believe that low feelings of self-worth are possibly the cause of much chronic depression and lethargy. And yet, so many books do not address this problem. I also believe many people are in therapy for decades for the sole purpose of trying to feel worthy.

This book's sole purpose is to heal your life, and help you to feel worthy. I have only read about 1/3 of the book so far, and already I see changes.

Ms. Hay helps you change how you feel about yourself with positive affirmations, in a certain order, building upon one another. Seem too simple? Let me tell you, it works! It is very much like cognitive therapy (addressing what your inner thoughts are), but for me, much more effective, because of the affirmations.

She also writes the book with great warmth and wisdom - there is nothing clinical about it. Reading this book is like jumping in a pool of warm fragrant water, and letting the words just run all over you. There is great compassion and warmth in this book. It is as if a great sage is speaking, with love bursting out all over the place.

Not only that, the book itself is healing just to look at! I have never seen such a beautiful book - every page is a color that is a feast for the eyes, with gorgeous subtle art work. The type is beautiful too. Any book on healing SHOULD look like this!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Life, Dec 21 1999

This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life Gift Edition (Perfect Paperback)
Louise Hay has been there and done that and this is evidenced by the content of her book. When I first bought a copy of You Can Heal Her Life, I read the first 2 chapters, and put the book down. I was angry because Ms Hay was telling me like it was, and I didn't want to hear the truth. I didn't want to look at myself and take responsibility for my life and my happiness and my health. I wanted to be told that My situation was beyond my control. A couple of years later, I picked up that copy of You Can Heal Your Life, ready to read it and hear the truth that saved Ms Hay's life, years before. As I worked through the exercises and started practicing the affirmations in the way Ms Hay instructed, I literally began to heal my life of suicidal depression, kidney disfunction, arthritis, and the hurt of child sexual abuse, as well as a slew of other problems. A miracle happened. I started to become happy. Since this time, I have continued to use the mirror exercises and affirmations that she describes, and continued to work to change my thought patterns. As a result of this, my attitudes have changed, and I have become a much more positive, optimistic person. Everything that I need in life seems to come to me as I need it. I used to get sick with great regularity, catching everything whether it was a common disease/disorder or not, and I rarely get sick or become injured now. I am happy almost every day and am seeing my dreams come true. The last 10 years, since I read You Can Heal Your Life for the first time, have been a wonderous journey, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. While I did the work, I owe a debt of gratitude to Louise Hay for writing and marketing this book so that her message could reach me and countless others. I have seen the same kind of results in almost a dozen other people who have read You Can Heal Your Life. There is a better way, and this is it. Give it a try, you're worth it! Love and Peace!

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a life changing experience, April 21 2004
By

This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life Gift Edition (Perfect Paperback)
I'm 26 and I was diagnosed with a spine of an 86 year old. I felt like a victim - "why me", "oh god, if I'm like this now, what will I be like in 10 years, if I'm even alive!", and "look at him, why doesn't he have a back like mine". It's been seven months since I first became sick and for almost that entire period I've felt nothing but pain, anxiety, and isolation.

Fortunately my father has this book and so I ordered my own copy of it as well as the "you can heal your life companion". I just read through this entire book in little over a week and my life has changed already. I was brought up in the new age way of thinking, but this book really took me to a new level. This book is really only the tip of the iceberg however, but she really tells you where to go. Metaphorically speaking, reading this book is like asking for directions - Louise Hay tells you to go south, then go 10 miles, then turn north, from there it's up to you, but she gives you the first few steps. She tells you in this book to read, search, and find other works that will help you on your journey. I've taken this book to heart and have done everything that she has said. She also recommends using alternative healing styles and chiropractic is one of them. I've been seeing one now, and along with Louise's book, I'm feeling better than I have ever since I became so called "sick". She tells you her story in the end of this book, and at first I was thinking, "Why do I need to know her story". Well, read it, and you will find out why I had to finish her story before I put the book down for the night. Read this book if you have an illness. Read this book if you don't feel happy. Read this book if you think you are not getting paid enough at your job. In any situation you are in right now, this book will steer you in the right direction, even if you are only a little off course. Trust me. Read this book. It may change your life... forever!

This book challenges the reader to look within themselves for healing and solice. We are what we believe ourselves to be. Our beliefs create our path, and even, our physical bodies more than we often realize. Louise Hay has written a book that inspires each of us to take full responsibility for who we are, and in turn, what we become. Within the pages of this book, you will find emotional and mental patterns that create us from the inside out. You can use the affirmations in this book to heal; rather than, hurt.
