its a good book to get introduce to the usability standard. Lots of example are covered in the book. a+

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but seriously needs a second edition
This book came out in 1999 and you have to be prepared for that. It's still about 80% useful, which is amazing considering how fast web technology is moving. I love the way the author uses lots of actual pictures of websites to illustrate every point. If he would bring it into the third millenium, I'd probably give it five stars instead of three.

Drawing on Nielsen's popular columns on web usability, thisbook presents a compelling argument for "practicing simplicity" in website design...I especially loved the extensive screen shots from numerous real world web sites and Nielsen's accompanying commentary on each.

In the world of e-commerce, where as the author writes, "users experience the usability of a site before they have committed any money on potential purchases," the bottom line should be obvious: web usability has a huge impact on profit and loss.

Those involved in web design and development, in my humble opinion as a Senior Web Design/Developer, would profit from reading this very timely and informative work.

I just can't believe this guy is preaching web usability when his OWN web site ( useit.com ) is just a big long scrolling page of text and hyperlinks, with no navigation of any kind.

Jakob Nielsen's idea of web design is similar to George Orwell's idea of 1984. Jakob would have us convert our HTML pages to a kind of "HTMLspeak," where our creative design is consolidated to just one long scrolling page of text to appeal to a sort of technologically inept society.
