Great Resource for Owners of Young Horses,
By A Customer
This review is from: From Birth to Backing: The Complete Handling of the Young Horse (Hardcover)
I have a "filly with an attitude" and was becoming bewildered with all the advice I was receiving. Which route to take? Natural horsemanship or traditional methods? Maxwell's book turned out to be a lifesaver. Writing with a combination of common sense and humour, Maxwell's methods are a fusion of NH with the more conventional training methods. This is a really wonderful resource.

Not worth a penny,

This book is terrible. Not only does the author try and steal ideas from other authors, he doesn't even do a good job of it. There are sections in the book where paragraphs end in the middle of a sentence and never seem to finish anywhere. I do not recommend this book.

I purcased this book yesterday and i am aready done reading it! I cannot wait to read it again. From birth to backing is with out doubt a horse training bible, there is very intelligent methods to go by from biting to rearing and halter brakeing to trail riding. I can't wait to start teaching my 5 month old belgin draft. At first I was afriad of her , she is already taller than me ( I'm 4'11") but now i feel that i am knowledgable enough to handle any situation. I really wanted to start off on a great start so i searched for the right book , I am very glad i bought this one!!

This book was terrible. It provided no helpful information whatsoever. It was lacking in even the most basic ridership information that everyone knows. Also the pictures were vague and hard to follow. It seems to be written for a two year old, using no words longer than three letters except for "horsies" instead of "horses". Overall I'd say don't buy this book unless you want to throw your money away.

This is an excellent book using Monty Robert's training. It has been (thus far) a life safer for training my young foal. Highly recommend.

This is the best foal and horse training book ever written! When I first bought it, it didn't look interesting but when I read it, I couldn't put it down!. Now that I'm buying a foal, and am going to be there when it's born, I'M PREPARED! A must have for all who are going to have foals!

Horse Whispering that anyone can understand,

This review is from: From Birth to Backing: The Complete Handling of the Young Horse (Hardcover)
When my daughter began riding and eventually entering any and all competitions within our county, my husband and I knew we had to keep up! Her passion for riding led to us leasing horses, and we took this responsibility seriously. We found this book by Maxwell and Sharples to be extrememly helpful. I was overwhelmed with how much there was to learn, but her book efficiently catagorized the most essential things one needs to know about horses. The format of the book profiles all ages of the horse from young to elder and deals with behaviors, anxieties, training, problems and solutions. The book goes in depth to reveal the best way to handle your horse and their behavior, not to mention health and maintainance issues.Briefly, this is an excellent all encompassing manual of comprehensive horse care and maintainance. For a lay person like myself, I feel I can tackle this book and come away with some very useful information, even if I am not exactly Elizabeth Taylor in her younger years.

A Definitive Guide,

This really is a must for all levels of horse owner, both novice and experienced. Richard Maxwell (Max) takes you through a step by step guide to all aspects of horse handling. Some of the stuff you may already be aware of, but I guarantee that you will learn alot. Additionally this isn't only for people interested in young horses, but is an important educational tool for everyone. Max doesn't make any assumptions about the reader, and he is careful to explain why he works the way he does. This book is well should be in every horse lovers library.
