Not really 'scary', but intense, smart, and disturbing,

This review is from: Stephen King's Storm of the Century (DVD)
Intelligent Stephen King mini-series.A stranger comes to a small Maine island town during the titular storm, and turns the town upside-down, starting by killing a sweet old lady in the very first scene. Played with wonderfully charismatic and subtle menace by Colm Feore, this supernatural stranger, who knows everyone's secrets and can manipulate others to do in themselves or loved ones, has one repeated message; 'Give me what I want and I'll go away'. Of course, we don't find out what that something is until the end of the third and last part of the series, but it is a surprising and effectively unsettling twist that leads to moral complexities and human emotion more than to simplistic horror. There are flaws. Tim Daly as the protagonist (the town's constable) tries hard, but the character is bland enough that he can't quite keep up our interest the way antagonist Ferore can. Also, for a 4 hour and 15 minute film, we get to know frustratingly little about many of the supporting characters. While well acted, we often are given a first impression of a character, and then really never learn much else. This keeps the film from becoming truly great when the climax involves the townspeople turning on themselves. There's also the slightly annoying logic question. If Feore's character is so powerful, why can't he just take what he wants? (There's an explanation, but it's pretty thin). None-the-less, I was almost never bored, and the film is very well made. Not quite a classic, but very much worth a look.

Best Stephen King's movie of all time.,
This review is from: Storm of the Century (DVD)
This is a 3 hours movie and it's not for the faint of hearts. It talks about the devil that want something from a specific town. As all Stephen King's stories, it's a small town kind of isolated from the rest of the town. The devil wants one thing "give me what I want and I'll go away!". I won't ruin it for you, and I won't be a spoiler to tell you what he wants. The best thing about this movie is the ending. As many stupid authors write the endings like a fairytale and how everyone marries at the end and run happily ever after, which is stupid. Because on this life we are living on, it's rarely ever going on the right direction. When Stephen King's was asked by an angry fan who said "I work everyday 10 hours, and when I come home, I want to see something nice on T.V. not a stupid ending like this" Stephen King's answer was: "this is my ending. On any given day, on any given night, this is what people would do against any big problems. If you don't like it, then you just have to shove it up." And the ending will shock you, but if you think about it, this is the reality we're all living in. Enjoy this piece of art :D

You can cut the tension with a knife!!,

Very few of Stephen King's movies translate well to the big screen, mainly because his stories are so detailed and so much gets cut out when converted to a screenplay. Storm of the Century is the exception!! It follows very closely to the book and very little is left out, much to the relief of this die hard King fan. From the very first frame this film grabs you...and doesn't let go until the credits roll. The acting is top notch and one humorous moment takes place when the killer, Andre Linoges is sitting watching the TV with the busted screen....watch carefully and lo and behold who is the commentator that you see? None other than Mr. King himself....it seems he, like Alfred Hitchcock, loves to appear in cameos in his movies. The twists and turns are many, and the feeling that creeps over you as the film progresses is unbelievably scary. Just when you think you've figured it out....NOT!! I have made this film a part of my extensive library and rank it among my all time favorites. To be watched again and again.

Good movie, loses it at the end,
This review is from: Stephen King's Storm of the Century (DVD)
I watched Storm of the Century yesterday, with low expectations. However, it did exceed them. At 4 1/2 hours long, you need to have a lot of patience with it. The movie maintained a good element of mystery, but about two hours in the movie you'll want it to speed up. It has its quick gasps and scares, and the usual King twistedness. The movie also made some good Roanoke references. The most dissapointing part of the movie was the end. The solution to the problem was the one you expected so, it lost the element of mystery towards the end. The movie is not really scary as you watching it, but in the dark, some scenes of it come back to you. I would see it if you have a decent amount of time on your hands and nothing else to do.

They never get it right!,

This review is from: Storm of the Century (VHS Tape)
Instead of the actors trying to put on a Maine accent in this film, they should speak in their own natural voices because they never get it right...It is a bit funny when actors "from away" try to pronounce "ayuh". Unless you live in Maine or northern New Hampshire don't even try. This one fellow in this film tries to say "ayuh" and it comes out "Eye Yuh. Not even close, mistah.

This is my first Stephen King film and I absolutely loved it. It contains all the ingredients for a great horror/thriller film. The acting by Colm Feore(Andre Linoge) was great!!!!!!! I also liked the soundtrack because even though it was basically the same lalala the whole movie it created a somewhat creepy pessimistic environment which made it better when someone was getting possessed. The whole idea of a demon possessing people is just totally great. That cane rules. Linoge being 'Legion' is really cool. I think the kids acted really well. I liked the part when the kids saw the cane, touched it, then dropped dead(sleeping?). This film was somewhat repetitive and long because each death was caused by someone being possessed, but each murder and suicide was great because of the detail and emotion and creepiness. Perhaps the creepiest murder(suicide) was when the old lady drowned her face in the sink. The goriest part is when the man cuts himself to pieces with the axe. The scariest thing about it is that after each murder they always wrote "Give me what I want, and I'll go away". That quote is probably the best line in a horror flick ever. This film was scary, yes, but I found it more of a suspense thriller, because I slept during the night fine(I saw it at 8oclock at night and it finished at midnight). I recommend this film to anybody who is fascinated by the art of possessing people and to anyone who reads Stephen King like a crackhead snorts dope(me). Go to blockbuster or where ever and please get this film, it is great.
