5.0 out of 5 stars A multi-faceted tale that gleams at every angle!, July 5 2004
By
This review is from: A Sword for the Immerland King (Paperback)
I read this book in three days while on vacation in Maine. I could not put it down. While it does have a prominent theme of action and fantasy, a Sword For The Immerland King is overflowing with new ideas and true wisdom. F.W. Faller starts each chapter with a quote or proverb that relates to the following chapter. They are all very wise and relevant, and I found myself looking forward to reading each new proverb. For example, two in particular that caught my eye: "Who is the greater prisoner: the caged man whose mind transcends his physical boundaries or the untethered being whose mind holds him in a cage?" and "We are forever doomed to suffer with histories defined by those who are able to shout the loudest.". Faller also deals with some spiritual ideas, such as "cymbic" relationships and the myriad layers of the "vorn" (sort of like the soul). The characters, plot, and scenery are very skillfully developed and described. Aside from everything else, FW Faller has an exquisite way with words, a talent that he exercises in weaving this intricate tale that I will most certainly re-read after I've finished the sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fantasy Novel!, Jan 7 2004

I was happily surprised to find out that there are still great fantasy authors out there who can not only spin a good yarn, but also do so in a way that shows morally why some ways of acting are better than others. I eagerly look forward to the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take an Adventure -- and bring your family!, Jun 23 2003

This review is from: A Sword for the Immerland King (Paperback)
The Sword of the Immerland King captivated me with a story in the epic proportion of the Lord of the Rings. With exquisite imagery and just the right balance of suspense and imagination, the author succeeds in creating a book that you never want to put down. Personally, although I read dozens of books a year, I'm not an avid fiction reader. But since I knew this author, I thought I would give it a try. I was not disappointed. I finished it in less than a week and now I'm reading it to my two boys (8 and 6) who only complain when I stop reading to them!

Fantastic job! I am hungry for the second volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great book!, April 7 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Sword for the Immerland King (Paperback)
A Sword for the Immerland King is one of the best, if not the best book I have yet read. It is a fantasy good for almost all ages that can comprehend the complex story line. The characters are real and come alive during the book. It is action packed and the world of Tessalindria is an incredible nation with a complete history. I am strongly looking forward to the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great First Book, Feb 15 2003

This is the beginning of an epic fantasy. Faller has created all the classic archetypes in this good vs. evil battle. He shows that much of the battle a hero faces come from within. Vrengnia and Paca make great leading characters and each have to fight their own heart battles. The action, imagery, and battle scenes of the world of Tessalindria were stunning. The story-line kept me drawn in and I await the second book, ready to pre-order it if I can.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Page Turner, Feb 14 2003

I plead guilty - I love fantasy and JR Tolkien type literature, so it was easy to love this book. That being said, it was still a real "page turner". The plot was exciting, and not obvious. The characters were real, they made mistakes, were heroic at times and had emotions that you could relate to as you read the book. For instance, the son of the smith made a huge mistake - and you found yourself hoping that he learns from it and doesn't get killed as a result. All that aside, maybe the best thing I can say, is that my 14 year old son couldn't put the book down. Highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fresh Look at Medieval Fantasy, Jan 18 2003
By

This review is from: A Sword for the Immerland King (Paperback)
I'm an avid reader of Fantasy and Science Fiction and have been since the 1940's. FWF's book about an imaginary world with knights, princesses and blacksmiths is one of the best I've ever read. Some reviewers found it to be a "page turner", but I found it forcing me to go more slowly, to savor phrases, mottos and words of guidance useful in any age. I'm also an engineer and FWF's description of blacksmithing was a real joy to explore, clearly based on his mastery of the craft. As another reviewer said, this book is good for any age from early middle school (possibly earlier for precocious readers) to "mature" (like me!). Do yourself a favor and get this book for many hours of enjoyment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sword for the Immerland King, Dec 31 2002

This review is from: A Sword for the Immerland King (Paperback)
For not having been a medival fan I throughly enjoyed A Sword for the Immerland King. I was captivated by the book as well as by the ability Mr. Faller had to keep your attention span with so many characters. It intrigued me that at the end of the book I had all my questions answered but it kept me wanting more when I had it completed! I can't wait for the sequel to come out. Please read it! You and your children will enjoy this wonderful new and exciting book!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Rings" with a conscience, Oct 17 2002
By
Stan (MiddleEarth) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Sword for the Immerland King (Paperback)
Here is more than just science fantasy (altho there is plenty of that), here is a story of relationships, with more complex feelings than just fear or attraction. F.W.F.'s writing is still simple enough to keep the interest of a middle schooler on up, with no language or situations that would be considered offensive.

He paints great images of scenes in the book, and his descriptive accounts of medieval activities such as smithing let you know that he must have a first hand familiarity with the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Become absorbed by an imaginary world with real truths, Oct 2 2002
By
This review is from: A Sword for the Immerland King (Paperback)
Verbal paintings and creatively descriptive ideas and settings provided an outlet for my cluttered mind to escape into. I found myself asking the questions and working through the decisions of the characters as they did. There is good and evil, hidden mystery, surprise, deception, war and love all woven into a pleasanlty exciting fantasy with deep truths. If we all created things with the energy, patience, and thoughtful control that the blacksmiths do, our world would be a better place. I look forward to a sequel.
