Inspiration bound,
By Vera Lynn (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Writer's Book of Matches (Paperback)
This is the book I've spent months searching for. Not this book, specifically, but this kind of book. Sure, there are numerous books on the market that offer writing prompts and inspiration to get you writing, but few offer truly free-form inspiration. Those other books usually provide rigidly prescriptive prompts that limit you to a specific plot scenario without actually inspiring you, or else they pose introspective questions better designed for journaling. I'd never come across a book of prompts that actually inspired me to start writing. The Writer's Book of Matches is exactly the sort of book I was looking for. I'm not sure if it's on the verge of going out of print, since it took nearly 2 months for the book to arrive, but it was well worth the wait. The prompts are simple, but vivid, triggering your creativity but leaving the story details open for you to imagine. The prompts include scenarios (An old man is dining alone in a crowded resturant when a fire breaks out) and bits of dialogue ("Lucky you, I'm free tonight. One show only, though, okay?") to get you started, and there are 999 more inside the book. When you figure that it costs little more than a penny per prompt, this book is a worthy investment whether you're looking for a new story idea or just a random idea to break through your writer's block. |
