As a beginner knitter, I was excited to see that this book also functions as a mini-reference guide to some of the basic knitting stitches. 3.0 out of 5 stars nice ideas, too much instruction
Some of the ideas are nice in the book -- building blocks and balls are a nice idea for gift giving, but the instruction was way too lengthy, in some place confusing and (in my learner's opinion) incorrect. I made the ball and I had to refer to another book to be able to decrease correctly -- the decrease instructions in this book read more like pass-over instructions...

As a beginner knitter, I was excited to see that this book also functions as a mini-reference guide to some of the basic knitting stitches. However, after I started my first project, I had to refer back to "Knitting for Dummies", which has clearer instructions in knitting techniques. So, if this is your first venture into knitting, I would recommend that you puchase this book in conjunction with another, in-depth reference guide.

Having said that, I give a hearty "thumbs-up" to the clarity of the instructions for a given project. I am working on a pair of booties, and have been able to follow the instructions well enough to learn techniques for yarnovers (a method for making eyelets) as well as i-cords.

My only other disappointment was with the breadth and practicality of some of the projects. There are a number of patterns for sweaters (a little too challenging for this beginner!) and toys, but I was looking for some good "heirloom" projects for a newborn niece - I had to settle for the baby booties and hat, for which there are only two or three patterns in the book.

Overall, a good choice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Now this is a beginner book!, Jun 9 2004
Teaching from scratch and moving on one project at a time! Instead of making useless squares, they become wearable garments and blankets instantly. It's a good idea like someone else said to use cheap practice yarn in case you do make a mistake. But don't get discouraged, this is the BEST beginner book hands down. Work through as slowly as you need to, but stick with it, you'll be expert in no time!

5.0 out of 5 stars great book for making gifts for loved ones, May 24 2004
By A Customer
I like this book because it expands on the usual baby designs, and includes patterns for balls and blocks and other items that you don't usually find in baby pattern books. While some have complained that the patterns are too simplistic to be considered 'heirlooms', I think that in today's hectic world, anything you take the time and love to knit is something very special. Would you rather give someone you love something you knit with care or something you bought half an hour before the baby shower?
That said, the patterns are very appealing and useful, and are beginners will love the information and 'how-to' sections in the book. I have progressed far beyond the beginner's stage of knitting, but this was one of the first books i bought and i still love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book, Jan 7 2004

This book is very well done for anyone new to knitting. It's instructions are easy to follow and so detailed that is would be hard to make any major mistakes with these patterns. The suggested use of cottons and wools make for beautiful, practical items of clothing for baby. Some of the suggested yarns are too pricey for me, but it is easy to substitute a more reasonably priced yarn and still achieve excellent results. I've made the mommy sweater, 7 baby washcloths, the gorgeous felted diaper bag, and will make a little teddy bear and then the little rolled collar sweater next. I just can't put this book down. I've never had a pattern book that had so many appealing patterns.

3.0 out of 5 stars nice ideas, too much instruction, Oct 28 2003

Some of the ideas are nice in the book -- building blocks and balls are a nice idea for gift giving, but the instruction was way too lengthy, in some place confusing and (in my learner's opinion) incorrect. I made the ball and I had to refer to another book to be able to decrease correctly -- the decrease instructions in this book read more like pass-over instructions.

If you know what you're doing, it's a nice book to flip through for project ideas. If you're learning how to knit, this is not a good purchase at all...the instruction is confusing and limited.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner's, Oct 27 2003
By A Customer
This book is fabulous. I managed to teach myself and several others how to knit using this book. Knitting has become a passion for me now. The patterns are great with clear, easy to follow instructions. You will learn everything you ever wanted to know about knitting from this book. A great reference even if you don't knit baby projects (though not all the projects in the book are "baby" projects- a few sweaters for mom and a tote to name a few.)

5.0 out of 5 stars The only baby book you need, July 25 2003

Jen Gould (Fresno, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This book has pretty much any pattern you would need to knit for a baby. It also has great instructions for beginning knitters. I've made about half of the patterns for various babies I know, and the gifts are always appreciated. I highly recommend this book.

I expected a bit more from these authors. The instructions are good, but the designs are basic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute patterns + great beginner book, April 22 2003
By A Customer
I am a new knitter so, this is a great book for beginners, I have bought several knitting books in the last couple of months, but so far besides Sally Melville's "Knit Stitch" , this one is pretty well written and easy to understand. I bought this book so I could practice on small things like blankets and baby sweaters, then I can hopefully move on to adult things for me. Unfortunately good yarn is pretty expensive ..., so I am not ready to move on to bigger projects yet. Hope you find this review helpful, that's how I decided to buy all my knitting books by reading these Amazon reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars A winner for a beginner, April 1 2003
By A Customer
I have been knitting small projects for a number of years, but have much to learn! This book is great because it is written for beginners, so you are not left to figure stuff out on your own. I think the photos are darling and inspirational. I have knitted many projects from this book (the ear flap hat looks so cute on) and will continue to do so. Love it!
