I was very pleased with the delivery of this book. Much quicker than expected and a brand new book well produced. It requires a fair degree of effort to follow the program but I am in my fourth week and believe it is having a positive impact on my attitude. I would not recommend it to someone who is seeking a quick fix to their problems. This is for the thinking person who is prepared to take the time for longterm self-betterment.

Although this book very good, it is not one that can be read just once - like a novel. I find that I am going back over what I've read to try and put things in perspective. It is NOT what I would call "easy reading". There's nothing in it, so far, that I haven't heard before; it's just put together from the writer's point of view to enhance her message.

Item was not received prior or on July 10th, but did receive it a couple days later. Very happy with the book, excellent condition - really it almost looks brand new. Will definitely look at using Bay City Books again.

Why oh why is it that every addict who recovers replaces the addiction with God. On no such level is the addict cured. If anything they are as addicted as they ever were. The difference being, instead of being addicted to harmful substances such as alcohol, cocaine, meth, etc. They are addicted to religion. Although to be fair, some (including me) would argue that religion is just as harmful as any substance.

However I digress.

The Artist's Way is a book that is supposed to teach the layman how to see thing in an artistic sense. The author, Julia Cameron, was herself an alcoholic. And surprise, surprise. She abandoned drinking, found God, and decided to write a book about how you too, can find creativity if only you embrace God.

Well I have news for you Ms. Cameron. One does not need to accept God in their lives to be creative. And I'll tell you another thing. Your book completely lost it as early as Page 3, where you state in point 5...

5. Creativity is God's gift to us. Using our creative energy is our gift back to God.

Umm. No. Afraid not. Creativity comes from many different angles. Newspapers. TV. Photographers. Painters. History. Mom. Dad. Friends. The list goes on and on and on. To say that this is all the result of God is crazy talk.

If you're looking to expand your creative knowledge, take an art course. Get out in to nature and expand your love of life. Do not bother wasting your time reading The Artist's Way.

The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron is a classic. The author describes its essence when she says: "In 1978 I began teaching artists how to "unblock" and "get back on their feet" after a creative injury. I shared with them the tools I had learned through my own creative practice. I kept it all as easy and gentle as I could." I love the way she describes being inspired to begin teaching the Artist's Way because I believe it describes how each of us receives the gift of "inspiration". She says: "Like all artists - like all of us if we listen - I experience inspiration. I was "called" to teach and I answered that call somewhat grudgingly."

My favourite exercises from this book are the Morning Pages and the weekly Artist's Date. However, I love the entire 12 week program. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is at a time in their life where they are looking to reenergize themselves from a creative or any other perspective.

The book is full of fabulous quotes. Some of my favourites include:

"The capacity for delight is the gift of paying attention." Julia Cameron

"Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." Anais Nin

"If I allow myself to be bullied and cowed by other people's urges for me to be more normal or more nice, I sell myself out. They may like me better, feel more comfortable with my more conventional appearance or behaviour, but I will hate myself." Julia Camerson

"Follow your bliss and doors will open where there were no doors before." Joseph Campbell

"You're either losing your mind - or gaining your soul. Life is meant to be an artist date. That's why we were created." Julia Cameron

Enjoy it!!

This book is about getting over blocks in one's creative output, but it's more than that. It's helpful to have someone to debrief with as you go through it, but in any case it can't help but have a beneficial effect on one's life if you make an effort to do most of the exercises. Opening your horizons is a given. Highly recommended.
