5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Recipes For A Healthy Lifestyle
I love this book! There are so many tantalizing recipes to try. The other great thing about this book is that celebrities who are either vegan or vegetarian contributed to make this book. I'm sure that when you see pictures of some people like Bill Goldberg - a WWF Wrestler, you'll be surprised. Vegetarianism is no longer a topic to shy away from. Millions of people...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to vegan cuisine / Not so comprehensive
Stunningly designed - this book is a great introduction to vegan cuisine. There is a great assortment of recipes, many of which are easy to prepare. While I enjoyed the flashy design - I wonder if the amount of recipes inside makes it worth the price. A better choice might be PETA's earlier cookbook "The Compassionate Cook" - it doesn't have pictures but...

Millions of people are changing their lives for the better and cutting out animal products from their diets. Now when someone asks you just what exactly do you eat... you'll be able to brag about the divine desserts and mouth watering entrees that are all animal free! Do your body & the animals a favor and buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars good recipies, cheapo book, Aug 18 2003
This review is from: PETA Celebrity Vegan Cookbook (Paperback)
i think it was about a week or so after i started using this book that it started falling apart. now the first 32 pages can be pulled out singly to set on the counter when desired. it actually works great, just hope i don't ever lose them. the binding is the biggest joke in book binding ever. it's just glue on the edge of a bunch of papers, and obviously doesn't hold well or my pages wouldn't be detatched from their home.

the pictures are really badly shot, and very few show the stars to their own advantage.

there are at least two desserts, i believe, that are pictured on the main dessert page of which the recipies are not given in the book. it would be nice if there were more pictures of the end results. there really are, well, now that i'm looking for it, none whatsoever. i think one of the three desserts pictured might have its recipie in the book.

really good recipies. great egg salad like stuff, the best recipie i've tried, with a few variations. (as a side note, i've found leeks to be phoenomenal in egg salady things.) great french toast. some nice quotes. not great from a health standpoint at all, though, including all kinds of hydrogenated tofutti products in recipies. the boyfriend loved the cheesecake, and i thought it was good, too. contained two tubs of tofutti cream cheese, main ingredient partially hydrogenated oil. yeah, i'd buy it again, definately. my main suggestion is to not expect it to be as professional as you would naturally expect...expect something that looks a little bit amateurly designed. and dirt low quality binding.

While I enjoyed the flashy design - I wonder if the amount of recipes inside makes it worth the price. A better choice might be PETA's earlier cookbook "The Compassionate Cook" - it doesn't have pictures but there are far more recipes which are easy to prepare and it's sure to become a book that you'll rely on daily.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than just a collection of recipes, May 26 2003
By
Melanie "mongoliamel" (Cass Lake, MN, United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: PETA Celebrity Vegan Cookbook (Paperback)
The PETA Celebrity Cookbook is more than a collection of recipes, it is an entertaining cookbook filled with color photographs of various actors, musicians, and other well-known people, along with their recipes. Featured throughout the book are interesting and informative "Did you know?" facts about vegetarianism, health, and the environment.

Some of the celebrity recipes featured include: Tiffani Thiessen's Mediterranean Muesli, Jackie Chan's Eggplant "Steaks," Chrissie Hynde's Zesty Blueberry Poppyseed Cupcakes, Sir Paul McCartney's "All You Need is Avocado" Soup, Bob Barker's Savory Italian Bruschetta, Alicia Silverstone's Steamy, Creamy Artichoke Dip, and Montel Williams's Heart-Healthy Wild Rice with Walnuts and Raisins. Recipes are divided into sections for breakfasts, lunches, appetizers, side dishes, entrees, and desserts.

This book also doubles as a book of quotations. An introduction by James Cromwell, and sections on "How This Book May Save Your Life" by Dr. Neal Barnard and "Animal-Friendly Grocery Shopping" complement the recipes, facts, and quotations. The PETA Celebrity Cookbook is a fun book with compassionate, nutritious recipes and more. --reviewed by N. Glenn Perrett

3.0 out of 5 stars Great pictures and quotes, long ingredient lists, May 23 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: PETA Celebrity Vegan Cookbook (Paperback)
Looking for a good vegan cookbook and totally loving PETA, I jumped at this book as soon as I found it. It arrived and I was very excited to get it! However, I also was very disappointed. There are great pictures in here and I loved the quotes and quick facts, but as for being an everyday cookbook that I'd use...not so sure about that. The ingredient lists are very long and I just couldn't imagine my family eating this food. But I would imagine it being a good cookbook for a fancy get together. So it really just depends on what you're looking for.

Compiled by Ingrid Newkirk and enhanced throughout with full-color and b/w photography, The PETA Celebrity Cookbook showcases more than sixty celebrities, athletes, chefs, and activists who share their four-star, cruelty-free, palate pleasing, vegetarian recipes. From Paul McCartney's "All You Need Is Avocado" Soup; Jackie Chan's Chan's Corn Chowder; and Fabio's Portobello Passion; to Montel Williams' Heart-Healthy Wild Rice with Walnuts and Raisins; Rue McClananhan's Extreme Dream Cheesecake; and Alec Baldwin's Miami Blues Red Beans with Garlic, The PETA Celebrity Cookbook is a strongly recommended addition to any "animal friendly" vegetarian cookbook collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative recipes, beautifully designed, Jan 23 2003
This review is from: PETA Celebrity Vegan Cookbook (Paperback)
Amongst all the veggie cookbooks I own, this one ranks as the loveliest, both in terms of design and quality and innovativeness of recipes. This book is beautifully compiled, both insofar as cooking and style. The photography is superb, the recipes are terrific (try Exotic Orange Curry and Portobello Passion), its well-written. You'll feel healthier even if you just "read" it. Beautiful enough to be a coffee table book!! Even better if you cook from it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cookbook!, Jan 15 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: PETA Celebrity Vegan Cookbook (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for people who are curious about vegetarian cooking or who just want some healthy but delicious recipes. It also has good recipes for more experienced cooks. All the recipes are cholesterol free and most are low in fat. The Russell Simmons meat-like veg recipes were popular at my holiday party, and William Shatner dip was an excellent appetizer. I highly recommend this book. It also makes a good gift for people who need to pay more attention to what they are eating. Vegetarian recipes provide a care-free way to eat healthily.
