4.0 out of 5 stars A rare cogent work on enterprise architecture, Jan 21 2012
This review is from: Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution (Hardcover)
It is only rarely that business books, including on enterprise architecture, and concisely written, and avoid jargon. Some jargon is inescapable in this work, however the ideas are well presented and graspable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Save your business by planning better, Dec 13 2007

I've worked in the technology field for over 6 years. In that time, I've consulted for a number of large Fortune 500 corporations while implementing ERP systems. You can easily see the differences between a well run company vs a poorly run one. One differentiator is how they leverage their IT capabilities. Most organizations either ignore or fear technology. As a result, they fail to plan for a key aspect of their business which would otherwise give them a significant competitive advantage.

This book provides you with the fundamental considerations when trying to develop an IT strategy that meets the corporate business strategy. It is not technical at all and focuses more on strategy and execution.

It's a great 'starter' book with many real world examples written in a similar manner to many HBS cases. If you are looking for more in-depth material around Enterprise Architecture, however, I'd suggest looking at documentation for the actual frameworks themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of EA, Dec 13 2010
This review is from: Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution (Hardcover)
There is a lot of buzz about EA and not much good material out there to help define what good EA is all about.

I went to a lecture Jean Ross was giving on EA and I was impressed with the down to earth and practical way she addressed the subject with solid examples of what EA is and the common mistakes companies make in adopting it. Based on that lecture I bought the book.

This is a very thoughtful and well laid out text that can be read cover to cover. This is not just an academic text it is grounded with real world examples of how companies have gone about adopting and applying EA.

I would recommend this book to anyone that needs to understand why EA is important and the principles that are important to consider when starting a transformation. This is not a detailed how to book but it does outline the major stages that have to be followed to derive the most value from EA.

This book is digestible for C-level executives that are not fluent in IT if they need to understand why EA is worth the investment.

Light sort-of reading, well laid out ideas, thoroughly researched, and very common-sensical approach to understanding the importance of EA as a means to digitize business process successfully. Great examples and case studies that will make you say "yes, been there... done that" and will easily relate to past and present experience with customers or employers.
