Excellent tips on dressing for your shape!, Fév 9 2004
This book is the perfect guide for learning to make the best of what God gave you. I used to get so frustrated trying on clothes in department stores because nothing fit right...well duh! The author makes it totally clear that this is usually the case. There are excellent tips on how to utilize a tailor affordably and where the best places to shop are. The only downside of this book is that it doesn't include what items you can mix and match to optimize your wardrobe. I definately would recommend it to anyone. I paired it with the Lucky Shopping Manual and now I'm on a roll!

A book every woman who wants to look her best should own, Fév 16 2004
In the sea of so called 'fashion experts', Farr is a real standout. Her approach to style differs greatly in that it instructs women how to honestly assess their wardrobes and logically pinpoint their individual body type. She clarifies how to flatter any figure (including plus sizes), incorporate trends and individual style, mix and match pieces, shop on a budget and avoid falling victim to common fashion mishaps. The book isn't limited to just clothing - bras, stockings accessories and tips from beauty experts are also thoroughly covered. Best of all there are pages and pages of tips, places to shop and stylist secret weapons that even the most fashion savvy girl probably doesn't know. My favorite section of the book is 'Your Tailor is Your Best Friend' which details everything from having a garment fit to having a piece custom made. Unlike other guides I have read, this book is written without condescension and truly aims to make all women feel beautiful and stylish. This book is not only an incredibly useful tool but is also a great read. Farr writes with humor and gives the reader a number of hilarious personal, real women and celebrity anecdotes.
This is without a doubt the fashion guide to buy. I have given a few copies as gifts and my friends loved it too.

I'm a forty-six year old woman returning to the work world. This book has saved me a lot of time and a lot of money. Ms. Farr is very specific in her recommendations. She lists brand names, stores and catalogs and what they have to offer women of each size and shape. Even shoes are judged based on their ability to flatter a particular body type. The Pocket Stylist really does reveal insider secrets. (The clothes on catalog models will NEVER look the same to me.) Thanks to The Pocket Stylist I will never again waste money on clothes that don't flatter me. The book IS my clothes shopping list.

This is a great little tool for all of us who are a tad clueless about how to dress. I liked the way it was organized and I found a lot of great ideas. A must have to get the best wardrobe a girl can. Also good--Dress Your Best: The Complete Guide to Finding the Style That's Right for Your Body.

Made sense but room for improvement, Janv. 21 2005
I've just received my copy of this book and, while I haven't read it from cover to cover just yet, I have had a chance to read the first couple of chapters and skim the rest. My initial conclusion is that this is going to be a useful and timeless book for anyone who cares enough to read about fashion without many pictures to help you visualize. However, that doesn't mean it's not without its faults. Mainly, I had issues with some of the "fashion vocabulary" (what exactly IS "roushing" anyway?). At the very least, the book needs a glossary. If it had pictures to go along with the definitions, this book would be perfect. At this point, this is my only complaint. The information contained in the book is very useful otherwise.

If you only buy one fashion book, buy this, Juil 15 2004

Farr zeroes in on what's probably the most important truth in fashion: Understand your silhouette and which shapes flatter it, and the rest is really pretty easy. I've bought several books on fashion, but this is probably the best. If you buy this book and back it up with one of Leah Feldon's, you're covered!

I don't have anything to add to the positive reviews that have already been posted. Suffice it to say that this book lives up to its promise. I have been buying lots of book on fashion, but this is the book I refer to over and over. Whatever your personal style--trendy, romantic, classic, sexy--this book is pertinent for you. This is a refreshing change from other books, which I feel try to steer you toward one basic style or another. Farr gives you basic principles so that you can choose tasteful, flattering clothes no matter what your preference. I could see a teenager using this book or a senior citizen! I now understand how celebrities look so good in their clothes. Her writing is clear and to the point, and specific without being confining.

The Pocket Stylist is one of the few fashion books I've found that lives up to its promise. It steers clear of the personal and lifestyle advice usually offered under the guise of fashion and provides a thorough guide to the little things that make you look better.Ms. Farr offers simple clothing and makeup advice, but the real (and perhaps fleeting) strength of this book is its wealth of wardrobe care and planning resources. She names names and provides phone numbers. This is not a glamorous book- despite its chic little illustrations. But its tips are the underpinning that can keep you looking elegant yourself.

A Required Addition to Your Style Library, Mars 27 2004
This is a well-written guide to defining your style. Not since Simple Isn't Easy have I run across such an informative fashion advisor.Add it to your library.

I just read about this book in Oprah Magazine, got it, and now have my own personal styist. The author has dressed actresses for the Academy awards as well as Star Jones- I'm not built like a model myself but Ms.Farr covers all body types. Put this book in your bag and take it shopping.
