A Great Overview of Asperger's for Kids and Adults Alike,
By An A.S. Mother (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Can I tell you about Asperger Syndrome?: A guide for friends and family (Paperback)
I had this book recommended to me by a professional when we were going through the diagnosis process. It is simply written and easy for anyone of any age to understand. My 9-year-old with A.S. felt relieved when he read it because he could relate to Adam in the story and I believe this book helped him understand himself better. We are now reading it with our 7-year-old, who had noticed his brother was different than he is. This book is written in simple enough language to help him understand his brother. The adults I have shared it with have also found it helpful. When you're faced with this diagnosis there are many great books you can read, but there is so much information to absorb it is easy to feel overwhelmed. This book keeps it simple enough to absorb the main points. Adam, the boy in the book, also tells readers that although there are many characteristics of A.S. they do not apply to every individual with Asperger's. For example he explains that he is bothered by loud noises, but others may be bothered by the feel of certain fabrics against their skin. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting to learn about Asperger's Syndrome and/or looking for a good book to share with others.

I purchased this book to open a dialogue with my 15 yr old Asperger son. He is aware of his diagnosis but we didn't really have anything to use to illustrate what that means to him, just vague ideas on social behaviour, etc. This book is so terrific, easy to read and understand. I am going to give a copy to each of his teachers every year. It explains what is in his head - things I know he feels and thinks but spelled out in a way that everyone can understand and accept. Good for all ages and a great tool for parents, family members and teachers.

I give this book to everyone the first time they meet my son, especially teachers and coaches. It is a short read but to the point and is instantly understandable to anyone.

I was looking for a book to use to speak to my son about autism and this is the best book that have come close to relating to him directly. It spoke to his level of understanding and let him that he wasn't alone. I would recommend this book as to parents and teachers who are trying discuss with children about autism or asperger.

I'm Surprised!,

Most of the pictures shown in this book remind me of my childhood! I was completely unaware of Asperger Syndrome in those days, though. Especially, the one on p.18, which seems to indicate the similar experiences in my 1st and 2nd elementary school days. Everybody enjoyed playing ball, while I was just watching the scene almost all the time, not knowing what to do. Nothing was so embarrassing and awkward than that, if you ask me. Of course, I had tried my best to interact with the other children, mainly because I felt quite lonely. However, I was so afraid of `screwing up' or my poor motor skill that I wouldn't join them to avert my embarrassment. In short, I was preoccupied with such mixed and complicated emotions!I'm sure this book tells about the experiences of people with AS and/or autism not only in the past but the present. And that will give them a lot of opportunities to gain happiness! |
