5.0 out of 5 stars The high point of the Gaunt story arc, Oct. 26 2008

This review is from: Gaunt's Ghosts: The Saint (Paperback)
This second Abnett omnibus collection comprises four novels: Honour Guard, The Guns of Tanith, Straight Silver, and Sabbat Martyr. The basic elements of the Tanith Regiment and the principal cast of characters have been established in the first omnibus, The Founding, and this collection further develops these characters through a variety of different conflicts and settings.

One of Abnett's talents is to find a variety of different settings and battle types and to breathe life into them. Despite the large number of military actions which take place in these pages, not one of them seems repetitive: tank battles in Honour Guard, fastrope aerial assault in the Guns of Tanith, trench warfare in Straight Silver, and urban warfare in Sabbat Martyr. This only scratches the surface of what Abnett manages. A superb collection, and quite possibly the high point of the series.

I really get a kick out of these novels. It is great having them all collected in three big volumes.

5.0 out of 5 stars 40k novels don't get any better, Jan. 11 2011
This review is from: Gaunt's Ghosts: The Saint (Paperback)
Picking up where the first omnibus (The Founding) leaves off, this next omnibus is consistently strong throughout all four novels. Each builds on Abnett's previous work, adding more depth & character to the regiment - including some entirely new characters, and the loss of some well-loved ones. Highlights include the real 'love to hate him' Elijah Cuu who makes Rawne & Feygor seem like stand-up guys, and the addition of a more spiritual element to the background. Which leads to my only caveat - if you loved the BSG reboot until religion went front & centre, you should knock a star off the review. Personally I thought it added some depth and a whole new dimension to several of the Ghosts.
