This review is from: Lonely Planet World Food India (Paperback)
I can't remember why I picked up this book but after purchasing it I was surprised at how good it was. It is not a cookbook, by any means, although it does contain a few pretty good recipes. Rather, it is a pocket size guide to Indian cuisine which, despite being so small, it is packed with useful information. There is a good overview of the different regional cuisines, information on customs and places to eat, and details on lots of common Indian foodstuffs. There is also a phrasebook at the end which, although really not that useful as guide to conversation, does provide a translation of foodstuff names in Hindi, Assamese, Bengali,Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telegu. The book is worth the price for that little feature alone.
