This review is from: Casual Power: How to Power Up Your Nonverbal Communication (Hardcover)
From Joe Catal. Author of the book "Telesales Tips From The Trenches". As a national sales trainer, this book is a must for anyone who wants to get ahead at the job and their career. The majority of sales people I train don't realize how they're destroying their own success by the way they dress. This book will teach you exactly what you need to learn to have the image you want/need to succeed. One of the best books I've ever read in my life. Get it, you won't be disappointed.Joe Catal. P.S. Be prepared to be beat up a little. This isn't a cutsy book. It's rough and to the point. I loved it!

Whether you are a pro at putting outfits together or a bumbling brut (me), CASUAL POWER by Sherry Maysonave will lend some insight into what's right and what's not in the world of business casual. I know a number of people able to string outfits together but making an impact or statement with non-formal clothing takes skill, taste and experience. Someone like me who has spent a small fortune on clothing to make it easier to put outfits together will really benefit from Ms. Maysonave's book. At the very least, I've made some progress in understanding clothing faux pas' and coordinating shirts, slacks, shoes and sport coats. And whether one wants to admit it or not, appearances do matter. Casual (and perhaps Grunge) dress has long been the norm for high-tech environments. I consulted for a software company during the 90's that sported a dozen or so software engineers. These guys and gals had an unwritten credo to determine who could wear the most disgusting, outrageous T-shirt, on a daily basis. While it provided much-needed comic relief, it was tragic nonetheless. For most men going casual, the challenge lies in locating the compromise between too stuffy and weekend slob. With the interpretation of casual so varied, Ms. Maysonave offers a general rule of thumb - remember there's a difference between casual dress and business casual dress. Additionally, no matter what one decides to wear to work, conducting business is the name of the game. For me, the need to change from "Dockers" casual to business casual came with too many unexpected client drop-ins and opportunities to meet new clients. Regardless one's profession, if suit and tie aren't required, tasteful business attire is still appropriate and, in most circles, expected. This is particularly true of many of the successful individuals and those getting ahead in front of the trend. CASUAL POWER is an easy-to-read book with many illustrations, color photos and tips to ensure success in dressing down powerfully. I highly recommend this book for most professionals, particularly those adhering to a casual dress code.

Can't go wrong with this book,

This review is from: Casual Power: How to Power Up Your Nonverbal Communication (Hardcover)
This book is intended for anyone who doesn't need to wear a uniform to work because the whole workplace, and culture that matter (have you looked around your church lately?), is getting more casual but what exactly are the rules. The author gives you the rules to give you the type of appearance and command that you are looking for. There book is easy to read and fun. There are plenty of examples and how to's. I have spent several years in the career placement and services field and find this book very appropriate for those doing a job search as well as entry-level individuals. The book also would make an ideal gift for a college graduate. To close, you can read this book and walk away with information that you can use and that can make a difference in your life.

puns and non-professionalism,
By A Customer
This review is from: Casual Power: How to Power Up Your Nonverbal Communication (Hardcover)
Well, there is an immense amount of non-professionalism in this book. This lady is just obsessed with puns in a few of the chapters. It becomes maddening. More attention is paid to how to make a pun that in the content of the chapter. Although there is a good amount of useful information in the book, it seems like more attention was paid in how its presented (thick pages full of graphics) than in the content of the book. More research and less graphic design would have worked out well. The McSly persona in the book becomes annoying as well. Seems more like a novice literary technique. Some of her examples dabble in psychology, which is becmoes trite. I don't mean to get down on the book, it did have a good amount of useful information, but alot of it is superflous too. "Don't wear short leather skirts and thigh-boots to work" No really? Who would've thought that? Regarding Men's fashion, the reder who recommended Alan Fleusser was quite correct in his review. This is a good starter book though, which covers the basics. Even if it does so in a juvenile manner assuming little or no intelligence on the part of the reader.

For the past 24 years, getting dressed to go to work as a registered nurse hasnt been much of a challenge thanks to the uniform. However, getting dressed as a self- employed Avon Independent Sales Representative who wants to be taken seriously as an aspiring and successful businesswoman is a major challenge for me. My modest investment in your book is sure to save me from wasting precious time and money shopping while allowing me more time to spend on enjoying my business and its growth. Thank you Sherry Maysonave for writing a beautiful book to "get me dressed for success". Casual Power with its easy to read format and beautifully presented photographs of clothing, jewelry, and style is a priceless business tool.My beauty business is motivated by my desire to help people look and feel the best they can be. Casual Power is a book that does just that and it will be featured in my next sales presentation as an affordable tool for success. And remember: "Stay beYOUtiful!"

How to look great in 5 minutes a day,
By Philip Cataldo (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews

"First, let me say how much I enjoyed Casual Power. This book not only gave me some great ideas how to dress effectively, but I was able to update my look so I would not appear stuck in the ice age. Casual Power really brought into focus the differences between "casual" and "Power Casual". I found the photos showing how to mix differnt jackets and slacks helpful in being able to look great with just a few items of clothing. Thank you for writing such a practical and helpful book that even men who don't really get fashion can easily use."

A worthy sucessor to John Malloy's advice,
This review is from: Casual Power: How to Power Up Your Nonverbal Communication (Hardcover)
This book is a must have for anyone who doesn't wear a uniform to work. Yes, of course, I have a personally inscribed copy, but that's not important. What is important is the information you'll glean--this book goes beyond usual the "change your look, change your life" advice. Sherry Maysonave also covers topics such as the nonverbal communication cues that convey power and authority (or lack therof) From the best color combinations to pulling together a great casual look, even on a tight budget, this book is jammed with great advice. You'll be able to unjam your closet and pass up clothes that no longer meet your work needs. You'll save the price of the book over and over again by not buying those "McSly" favorites. You'll also save time every morning by not staring at a closet full of clothes that you can't wear to work.

Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics,
By Gena Strang (Clovis, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Casual Power: How to Power Up Your Nonverbal Communication (Hardcover)
This book is powerful. I used to be a sundress and sandal type of gal, not realizing what I was actually telling my customers about me. This book changed by life! After changing my look and what I wore, I became a sales director with the nations leading cosmetic company. The comments I received from others were remarkable. They weren't sure what changed, but I was looking great. That alone showed me I was getting the respect and admiration I was looking for to build my business. I tell all of my consultants about this book and stress that they read it in the first month of their business. Thanks Sherry, for changing my life! |
