Inspiring work,

This review is from: Finding the Still Point: A Spiritual Response to Stress (Hardcover)
I just finished reading Tom Harpur's new book, Finding The Still Point. This publication is the latest in a long list of articles, columns, lectures and books by Tom Harpur which have informed and challenged readers regarding religion, ethics and spirituality over many years. Tom Harpur's gift for presenting deep, complex and significant issues in understandable andinviting ways continues to be evident in this book. Finding The Still Point identifies stress as the major issue currently facing all people throughout the world. No one is immune from the pressures of a world moving, changing and communicating faster than human beings can adjust their understandings and responses. Tom Harpur identifies the causes of stress in a scholarly, yet "reader friendly" way. He identifies the range of responses for dealing with stress and concludes that faith and spiritual development are absolutely essential in dealing with modern day pressures. Finding The Still Point is an inspiring work that looks at many old issues in new ways and applies old teachings to new realities. This book speaks to people of all faiths in a way that transcends denominational religion. One's spiritual development and faith journey can only be strengthened by pondering the challenging issues raised in this text. The book makes a very strong case for an improved world through a realization that all religions share the same core values and aspirations. These common truths should be reinforced to unify rather than divide various local and world factions. Finding The Still Point contains teachings which, if properly pursued, can positively transform individuals and societal institutions (secular and spiritual) and move each to higher levels of performance . These teachings require each of us to slow down, develop self care strategies and to listen. It is only then that we can find our individual "still point", a point of Spirituality exists within each of us at various levels of development and can be nurtured for further growth. Spirituality transcends specific faiths and religious denominations. My spiritual journey is nurtured by my Christian faith (Presbyterian denomination) and will be significantly enriched as I ponder, question, accept and reject the myriad of issues and strategies

This review is from: Finding the Still Point: A Spiritual Response to Stress (Hardcover)
An exquisite book. Tom Harpur manages to inform and enlighten, but in such a gentle manner that you become enchanted with his voice. Not everyone agrees with his beliefs, but the beauty is that he doesn't ask for this. There is never a moment in the book where he states that his opinions are correct. He simply unfolds his research, and you can come to your own conclusions. Not only is Tom Harpur a superb and gifted writer, he is also an educated one, which is rare and beautiful. Highly recommend this book to everyone, especially those who are looking for another view of life and existence. Would love to meet this gentleman in person, just to listen to his thoughts! |
