The Icing on the Cake!, July 13 2007
This review is from: Pink Icing (Paperback)
This anthology of short fiction is a treat from start to finish! Mordecai recreates Jamaica so vividly you experience the stories "like a movie in the mind." But these stories are more than just visual experiences. They are visceral, too, and resonate long after the book is finished. Each story is clearly a labour of love, for a time and a place that have shaped the writer and for the characters who show her view of that world. Mordecai captures the sound of the language brilliantly, so that you hear its Caribbean lilt, and her poetic flair enhances the narrative. Reading this book is like taking a trip to Jamaica, but not as a tourist. It invites you in to see the real place, as if by a friend who knows the culture intimately, and wants you to truly share it in-- not just encounter the glossy pictures and stereotypes of the travel brochures. These are characters who arrive "in living colour", and stay to visit. Like the title story, this collection delivers "the icing on the cake". I hope to see more stories by Pamela Mordecai!
