Disappointing to conscious consumers,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter (Paperback)
For anyone who really wants to count calories, this book is a disappointment. It is full of advice, some of which is not up-to-date with current research. Additionally, it has so many entries for eating out, fast food, etc. that the serious dieter or stay-at-home cook can hardly find the simple foods and ingredients that they may want calorie counts for. I'd send it back except the postage costs as much as the book.

12 Calories for a Teaspoon of Nutmeg!,

What a gem "Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter" is!
This purse-sized book puts honesty into eating. Whether you eat out, or make every meal from basic, seemingly wholesome ingredients, author Allan Borushek will surprise you and help you to eat well. It bashes two myths by showing not all homemade meals are good for you, and not all restaurant foods are bad for you. Essentially, it is a group of lists. You'll see the product name, and in three columns to the right of it, how many calories, fat and carbohydrates. The strength resides in its thoroughness. It seem as if the editors came in my neighborhood grocery store and took notes, cataloguing these stats from every item. There is even a calorie count for spices (a teaspoon of nutmeg has 12 calories!), as well as alcohol (you'll find your favorites brands, plus a general list). There is a section on restaurants in general. Presuming, for example, red beans and rice is pretty much the same anywhere, we learn we'll be eating about 280 calories. Disheartening is the restaurant chain section, from Applebee's to Zantiago. I was pleased to see how Boston Market did, but I see the stuffing and gravy on their turkey meal I love costs me an additional 430 calories. There are some nutritional sections, explaining the fundamentals of a good diet, what fiber is all about and some discussion of sodium. It is all very handy, and so I fully recommend "Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter." Anthony Trendl editor, HungarianBookstore.com

The best calorie, fat and carb book out there!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter (Paperback)
I have been using calorie counting books for years and this is by far the best and most comprehensive I have ever seen. It includes 170 fast-food chains, many of which you would never find in other calorie books. It also has a very useful index in the back, so you can find items very quickly and the book is small enough to fit easily in a purse. Very highly recommended!

The Best Calorie Guide Published,

"You definitely should have a good book of caloric values. Although there are little calorie booklets at the grocery checkout counter, I urge you just once to spend a small amount for a complete guide that will help you in many ways. I recommend for you the book Irecently bought, The Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter, by Allan Borushek....You'll find it easy to look up the caloric content of every food you eat--which is exactly what you need to do to succeed.... Perhaps its best feature, which puts it ahead of most books in this field, is its very complete listing of fast food chains and restaurants--101 of them! Would you have guessed that there were that many?"This endorsement comes from TOUGH TALK ABOUT FAT! HOW TO REACH AND MAINTAIN YOUR IDEAL WEIGHT, a new book by William B. Parsons Jr., which is the only book anyone needs for a slim-trim future. It says, "Don't go on a diet!" Instead, take charge of your life and stay in charge. It doesn't scold a reader for being fat; it tells him to GET TOUGH with that excess fat and get rid of it--all of it. Then it tells WHY (heart attacks, diabetes, and wearing out your weight-bearing joints). It tells HOW (reduce your current intake of calories by 500-700 calories a day, thus losing 4-6 pounds every month--or more, if you can reduce your intake more. "It works like your bank balance." TOUGH TALK ABOUT FAT! recommended Allan Borushek's book so highly that I bought it and was even more impressed by its completeness, ease of looking up food items, and its compact (pocket or purse) size. The reader who needs to lose weight will find his/her life changed by these two books, selling for a total of less than $20! I highly recommend this combination.

Really is the best,

This really is the best book out there for calorie counting. I have yet to llok something up that hasn't been in there. BUT, I reduced the rating by one star because the table of contents is wrong. Obviously, the last time it was updated, the TOC wasn't updated as well, so it's off by three or four pages throughout, which drives me nuts. Otherwise a terrific resource.

I just started trying to lose weight and eat healthy two weeks ago, and I've already lost 12 pounds. I borrowed this book from my grandmother, who also lost a lot of weight, and I use it every day. The book helps you control your portions so your'e not over eating. And I love the charts, because they allow you to set your own weight loss goals. If you want to continue to eat your favorite foods, and still lose weight.....buy this book!

A lifesaver,

When my son got diabetes, I was so scared, there are so many foods with no nutritional informaton on it. A friend of mine gave us this book as a gift and I felt so relieved, my son loves fruit and now I have no problem working fruit into his diet. This book has become my bible, we can even eat out without worry because there is a resturant guide. I give this book to everyone of his teachers, to help him make good choices when I am not there. I would recommend this book to anyone with diabetes or anyone just trying to count there carbohydrates, it is great.
