This review is from: BATTLE MiLK 2: Tangents and Transitions in Concept Art (Paperback)
this is a concept art book that isn't tied to any animation, feature film, tv series, or video game, yet when i turn the pages I want to see the art come to life in any one of those mediums. I'm a huge Killian Plunkett fan and his work shines on here, as does the other work by many superbly talented artists. A great book to pick up and read through, and to view from initial pencil sketch to finished product.

This was a letdown...Killian Plunkett's portion is just great though, and Wayne Lo has a couple of very charming pieces. Other than that though, I felt it was a waste of money :(Ralph McQuarrie's oil painting in the introduction of the book made me wish I had bought a book with HIS art in it instead.

I didn't know that BATTLE MiLK had an earlier volume, which by now is quite impossible to find. But volume 2 is here, and it's very good, so grab it while you can. It's a collection of fantasy and sci-fi concept art from six artists, namely Wayne Lo, David Le Merrer, Thang Le, Kilian Plunkett, Le Tang and Jackson Sze. The art is very beautiful, with a variety of subjects from the imagination, ranging from character designs, to space stations, to background paintings. The quality is really high -- well, these guys work on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I particularly like Jackson Sze's, who brings his influence from Tibet and fantasy elements together to create a beautiful and convincing world. Each illustration or sketch also comes with commentary. Additionally, each artist also goes through their creative process step by step, from creation to execution. It's an inspiring concept art book. Highly recommended. Hopefully, there will be volume 3. (There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Visit my Amazon profile for the link.) |
