Love among the horses, Mar 10 2011
This review is from: Sutcliffe Cove (Paperback)
This is a very lovely, gentle story of how two men met and gradually fell in love. Brett owns a farm on which he runs a riding stable and Gerald is an accountant who decides one day that he'd like to take riding lessons. From this simple beginning--just two men in a business relationship--the story grows into a grand passion.
Just as so many real life relationships, this one starts very slowly and tentatively with neither man even suspecting the other is gay. But Gerald discovers that he loves the horses and soon spends more and more time at the farm and thus with Brett. It doesn't take very long before each man is fantasizing about the other until the annual picnic at the farm brings them together at the end of the evening. Their first kiss opens the flood gates of pent up emotion and from then on there's no looking back. The story contains plenty of lengthy, detailed, sizzling accounts of the two men's sexual activities but they're all part of the loving relationship. I don't approve of some of the things the authors have Brett and Gerald engage in, most notably, a lot of anal/oral contact (rimming), but that's a personal value and is not meant as a criticism of the novel.
I did like the setting of the story and, of course, the main characters as well. There was a lot more that we could have learned about them but didn't so I wonder if there might be a sequel in the works. That would be very appealing. Until then, however, let's say that this was a very pleasant book to read. Unlike most formulaic books of this genre there was no huge crisis or breakup that helped the characters come together. In this story there's just a gradual growth of emotional involvement from first meeting to the end of the story and that works very effectively here. As a reader one can simply let oneself float along as a close observer of the love that grows between Gerald and Brett. What a lovely way to spend a few leisure hours.
I'd give this an easy 4 stars out of 5.
