5.0étoiles sur 5 TAKE ME OUT OF THE BALL GAME, Nov. 5 2003
Par Michael Butts (Martinsburg, WV USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires

If you want someone to play a psycho, who else but the immensely talented Robert DeNiro? In "The Fan," based on Peter Abraham's novel, De Niro plays Gil, a washed up knife salesman who is obsessed with baseball. He's divorced from his wife, but has been able to maintain a relationship with his young, impressionable son. However, as Gil becomes more psychotic, his ex-wife realizes the potential danger so she puts out a restraining order. Meanwhile, Wesley Snipes' Bobby Rayburn recently purchased by the Giants for a cool forty million wants his #11 back, which has been given to Benito Del Torio's Juan Primo. And then the slump hits Snipes. DeNiro displays his loyalty by trying to get Primo to surrender the number and when he refuses, well it's....you can imagine. Onward then, DeNiro finds a wonderful opportunity to get into Snipes life by rescuing his son, Sean, who is drowning. He and Snipes almost bond, until Snipes confesses that he just doesn't care anymore, baseball is just a game. Snap goes what little is left of DeNiro's sanity and we face a showdown in a rain-drenched night game.
Maybe overwrought, but Director Tony Scott handles everything so well, he elevates his film above it's derivative plot. Some of the baseball scenes are quite beautiful; Ellen Barkin and Patti D'arbinville shimmer in great supporting roles; John Lequizamo as Snipes' manager is good, and Charles Hallahan (so good in the remake of "The Thing") has a brief, but effective cameo as Coop, Gil's childhood buddy.
Hans Zimmer's score is hauntingly beautiful and there are nice effects from the many Rolling Stones tunes that fill the picture. San Francisco looks beautiful, and the whole effect is quite effective.
An underrated thriller, highly recommended.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A Thrilling and Suspenseful Film, Nov. 27 2002
This review is from: Fan, the (VHS Tape)
Robert De Niro portrays Gil, a complusive baseball fan. His favorite player is Bobby Rayburn. When Rayburn has some troubles in his career, Gil will stop at nothing to ensure he gets back on his feet. Gil's obsessiveness gradually turns into madness, and his insanity is similar to that of De Niro's unforgettable villain Max Cady in "Cape Fear". Those who enjoyed "Cape Fear" should enjoy this movie. It's an excellent story that teaches a lesson about letting go of the past and not letting an obsession take over your life.

5.0étoiles sur 5 De Niro strikes again., Aoû 13 2002
This review is from: Fan, the (VHS Tape)
De Niro blends the roles of Rupert Pupkin and Max Cady in this pretty entertaining film about a man on the edge of madness. Gil Rennard is a knife salesman whose life is in tatters. His sales figures are down and he can't get them up. His estranged wife wants him far away and even attempts to bond with his son end on a note of disaster. Throughout it all, he remains loyal to baseball and to one player in particular, played with charm and finesse by Wesley Snipes. When Snipes career starts to slump, Gil takes matters in his own hands and murders a rival player on the same team. Gil's long slide into fantasy and madness ends with the kidnapping of Snipes's young son and an ill-organized and ultimately disastrous confrontation with his favorite player in front of fifty thousand fans. This plot is slightly ageworn and there's nothing especially original in its execution here, but De Niro carries the film with his usual charismatic intensity, and as ever, elevates what could be commonplace to wholly new levels.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Great movie., Fév 18 2002
This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. De Niro will surprise you with several twist and turns. Snipes plays the part of a bseball player and it fits him well. If you like De Niro or Snipes this is one to add to your collection.

The disc itself comes with both widescreen and Full Screen presentations, so it can satisfy both crowds.

5.0étoiles sur 5 BETTER THAN "CAPE FEAR"!, Juil 8 2001
Par Michael Crane (Orland Park, IL USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Suspense movies really don't get any better than this, especially when you decide to add De Niro into the mix. I feel that this movie is one of De Niro's best movies. Snipes is also very good in this dark thriller.

In "The Fan", Robert De Niro stars as Gil Renard, a knife salesman who's very close to losing it everyday. His ex-wife wants nothing to do with him, and she wants the man nowhere near their son.

The only thing Gil has left in life is watching baseball, and seeing one of his favorite players, Snipes, swing into action. But as the season goes on, Snipes seems to be losing his magic and is almost striking out at every game. Knowing this, Gil feels it's his duty to help the baseball player out, even if it means murder.

As Gil becomes more obssessed with the man, the more dangerous he becomes. Gil is about to put Snipes through absoulute hell and become a real threat to him, and his little boy. For Gil is no ordinary fan of the game, he is a sick stalker who will do anything to get close to Snipes.

Filled with suspense and surprises, "The Fan" delivers as being a first class thriller which will leave you pinned to your seat until the final scene. For those who liked "Cape Fear", this movie should not leave one feeling unsatisfied.

5.0étoiles sur 5 One of De Niro's best!, Mars 28 2001
This movie is a classic! DeNiro gives a chilling performance as an obsessed fan who will do anything to get close to his personal favorite baseball player, played by Wesley Snipes in an equally effective performance. The cinematography is great, and so is the direction by Tony Scott. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN! THE DOMESTIC ISSUES, THE VIOLENCE, AND PROFANITY ARE TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE FOR KIDS! This one is rough, but it is always fun to watch. Once again, parental discretion is advised.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Early batch of DVD but still one of the best, Nov. 13 2000

The DVD was released in 1997 (the year DVD format was launched) but the technical quality of the DVD is up there with the best of the best. The picture transfer is excellent and Dolby 5.1 is outstanding. There is no extra on this DVD but given that this movie was a flop during its theatrical run, a special edition is not very likely. Robert De Niro is super here. If you think he is creepy in Cape Fear, wait to see his performance here. A must for DVD collector.

If you're one of those people who are into sports and sports-based movies, like myself, then "The Fan" is for you. Here you will see the marvelous talents of Robert DeNiro and Wesley Snipes as a disgruntled knife salesman and major league baseball player. John Leguizamo plays Snipes' million-dollar agent, and handles his role well, for a serious actor. I was rather surprised to learn the chihuahua with a bit part in this film is none other than Gidget, the "Yo Quiero Taco Bell Dog!" You'll enjoy this film's suspensful ending, as well as the storyline. I saw "The Fan" at the theater, so thought I would add this VHS title to my video library. You should too.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Excelent Acting, Music, And Camera Work, Sep 7 2000
Par Clayton (New Brighton, MN United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I personally find this film EXTREMELY entertaining and suspenseful. Robert De Niro did an excelent job playing Gil Renard, an unemployed knifes salesman who's life takes a turn for the worse when his wife gets a restraining order against him (he cannot see his son anymore because of it), he loses his job in the business that his father started. But Bobby Rayburn (Snipes) has come the San Fransico Giants (for $40 mil because of his .310 life time batting avrg) and now Gil has something to look forward to, the world series. But when Rayburn gets stuck in a slump, Gil takes matters into his own hands to get hitting again and will stop at absolutly NOTHING. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat not knowing what is coming next. It keeps you entertained with Hans Zimmer's heart pounding, tear renching score and some of the best acting (From De Niro and Snipes and the ENTIRE cast) that you'll ever see.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Excellent Movie, More than just Sport, Nov. 7 1999
Par Un client
Well, what a movie. Anyone who doesn't like this doesn't like good movies. Snipes and DeNiro are excellent, as is the story of the fan who is sick of being taken for a ride by his heroes, who care little about the Fan. The only down is the dark lighting at the games, but you get used to it, and enjoy the movie. The unexpected turn when Primeau dies is dramatic, and helps pace the film well into its thrilling finale, that lacks predictability. 5 stars.
