SWEET AND LIKEABLE,
By
This review is from: Encino Man (DVD)
ENCINO MAN has no agenda, no political statement to make...it's a sweet and likeable film. And I'll bet there are many future PhD's who quoted liberally from this one...and can repeat verbatim the convenience store scene. Sometimes it's great to just sit back and watch one like this.

Another disaster from (use)Les Mayfield,

This stinking cesspool of dung is one of a long list of movies starring Pauly Shore. Forgive me, Dinah, but your son may be the most useless and unentertaining clods Hollywood has ever offered, and this movie showcases Pauly's terminal buffoonery. Did girls at the time think that he was "cute?" Perhaps, but as far as being a convincing actor, even in the horrible parts he has played, he has shown me nothing but a foul odor. I have also read the list of movies directed by Mr. Mayfield and, while having a fair amount of success over the years, he has failed to leave us with anything truly memorable. Most of his films are aimed at stupid teenagers and are supported by VERY shallow comedy. I wish Mr. Mayfield well and hope that someday he can find something to direct that he can be proud to be remembered by, not some Martin Lawrence crap or this awful, awful movie. This is in my top 10 WORST movies of all time.

Why this movie was allowed to see the screen, I don't know,

The acting was horrible, the lines were lame and the overall effect makes Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler's movies look really well written and acted. The only reason I went when the movie opened, was because my girl scout troop had gotten free passes. Even if I like Brendan Fraiser (whose better works include School Ties and Back to the Past)I could not bear to sit through this catastrophe. Even as it delivers an unintentional slap in the face to anti-darwinists (the caveman darwinizes to the modern world)and vindicates the school outcasts in one movie, there were far too many other holes to enjoy this movie. The idea that parents could be that ailenated and/or oblivous to the fact that their "foregin exchange" student has manners like a savage goes beyond belief. Nobody seems to care how Link arrived at the house or the fact that he is never heard once speaking in a language that would be considered 20th century international (ie German, French, Spanish, Italian etc...) Many years latter, I still feel really sorry for people who are expecting to get a halfway decent picture while renting this movie.

This movie was bad beyond words. Pauly Shore as usual was pathetic and the plot was nonexistent. What a joke, Frasier can do better.

How can I elaborate how funny this movie is?First off, for as funny as he is, this is Pauly Shore's BEST performance ever! Pauly Shore's one-liners will get laughs out of those who appreciate a good dialogue and script, whereas Brendan Fraser's slapstick comedy will make those of us who appreciate just the simple, funny stuff, very happy! In the end, we have a perfect blend of comedy's best two forms of laughter-creation! And may I add that this film offends no racial groups of cultures --- pretty amazing for a comedy as great at this one!

Pauly Shore and Lord of the Ring's Sean Astin with Brendan Fraser star in this hilarious and fun comedy about a Prehistoric Caveman being thawed out from a million years and now in modern California after being discovered by a couple of teenage slackers but both must decide to make the Encino man, a modern man.Suprisingly greatg, funny and entertaining comedy with great jokes including Pauly Shore's " Weasing the Juice" line, this movie is a guaranteed good time. Also recommended: Bio-Dome, In The Army Now, Jury Duty, Wayne's World, Austin Powers.

Two high school geeks find a frozen cave man and become instantly popular. The movie is hilarious and I thought Brendan Fraser was so adorable as Link. He wss funny, but at the same time you could identify with his problems. I felt so bad for him when he was in the museum and found out that his people were extinct. I also loved it when he did wrestling moves on that creep at the end of the movie. I would've given the DVD 5 stars, but it's only in Dolby Digital 2.0.

I find it hard to put a movie down that gives you some real good laughs and this movie does have it's moments. It's so unfathomable in it's plot, but that's what makes it a good escapism movie. The three leads (ASTIN, SHORE AND FRASER) are all aptly cast in their roles. Fraser plays the caveman (a little too convincingly), Shore is always good as the [silly] side-kick (but man is he good at that) and Astin..well he is so [darn] cutein this movie, who cares about his acting. ;)If you are looking for an intelligant and profound movie watching experience, don't rent/buy this. Stick to the classics. If you want 88 minutes of silliness and nonsense, you're in the right place. |
