Funny, stupid and totally escapist, Fév 22 2008
If you're a movie snob then this is NOT a movie for you. Don't even try.
If, however, you are a kid at heart and want some escapism for a short while and aren't afraid of laughing at really stupid stuff then this is for YOU!
I enjoy this movie and drag it out now and again and find myself laughing at the same things over and over (like when she practices kissing on a tree)and gets cuaght by a nun.
Maybe you have to be a bit wacky to enjoy this movie but I have an off the wall sense of humour so it appeals to me!
Pure entetainment that doesn't stretch your brain but hopefully will stretch your sides due to laughter.

How can you not love Mary Katherine Gallagher?, Juil 8 2007
The real Superstar is Molly Shannon, who never gets enough credit for her comedic and bona fide acting skills. It's great to have the always-funny Will Ferrell (as well as Harland Williams, one of my favorite comics) alongside her for the ride, but her portrayal of Mary Katherine Gallagher is all you really need to laugh it up for the 80 or so minutes of this SNL skit - turned full-fledged movie. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be one of the lucky people who were always cool and made great sport of putting the Mary Katherine Gallaghers of the world down. I'll never know because Mary Katherine is definitely "my people," a unique character who suffers the insults and humiliations of life among her cooler, prettier peers even as she dreams of having just a taste of the kind of life they take for granted. In the context of this movie, what Mary Katherine yearns for is a real slobber-knocker of a kiss -- and, like all of us losers, she falls for the most popular guy/girl in school. In other words, she does not have an easy row to hoe.
She is realistic enough to realize that the likes of Sky Corrigan (Ferrell) isn't going to drop the head cheerleader and come smooching her way any time soon (even after he tells her she has some nice moves). No, she thinks the only way she can get the hunky guy is to emulate her Hollywood heroines and become a -- wait for it -- Superstar! And just when she thinks she's exhausted all of her options, along comes a school talent show (with the winner getting the part of an extra in a morally positive film in Hollywood) that just might be the answer to her prayers. Winning the talent show would definitely impress Sky, she tells herself.
To make her dreams come true, she's going to have to talk her grandmother into letting her audition, scratch and claw her way through a catfight or two with the head cheerleader (who also happens to be Sky's girlfriend), and overcome several other less than surprising obstacles in her way. She does have some help, though -- from her fellow Special Education students, her new best friend, and even her own personal image of Jesus (also played by Will Ferrell).
Yes, it's oftentimes low-brow humor, especially in terms of the whole armpit thing, but somehow Mary Katherine's story always manages to remain above the fray of tastelessness and vapidity. There's a little (or maybe even a lot) of Mary Katherine Gallagher in many of us, and there is actually a good story in here beyond all of the jokes. The filmmakers even manage to pull off a really good ending without insulting our intelligence. This is just a fine, really funny movie.

This movie was truly funny and uplifting, Jui 11 2004
Like several other reviewers, I found this movie funny and entertaining. It was very light with lots of humor. This is a great movie to watch on a rainy day or when you are feeling down and out needing a picker upper. Many high school girls dream of one day being superstars and/or fantasizing about that first true romantic kiss. These are some of the things portrayed in the movie with lots of humor.

supa' stuff, Juil 14 2002
SUPERSTAR is the poignant, silly, campy comedy about a goofy, oddball, neurotic catholic schoolgirl, pining for attention in all the wrong ways. Another SNL project, this is the mastermind vehicle for Molly Shannon's Mary Katherine Gallagher character, co-staring Glynis Johns as her doting grandmother, Will Ferrell as the must-have guy from high school, and Elaine Hendrix as the loathsome cheerleader enemy. We travel her frustrations as she endeavors to try out for a talent show and a chance to win the part as "an extra, in a movie with positive values". I work in the industry, and I tell you, they get it right. Unlike most teen movies, this one has substance and something for those over the age thirty. The humor makes fun of everyone and everything, leaving no stones unturned in its wake. The characters as classmates are most inventive and idiosyncrartic bunch to grace the silver screen in some time. Even God makes a cameo appearance. Basically, this is the classic story of an ugly duckling turning into a swan, not one of beauty, but essence. The transition is necessary to convey the lessons one might learn, and the awkward process high school still is - the cliques, the estranged, the popular, the jocks, the shunned, etc. In the end, there are no real losers except those who never see this movie for the wonderful, modern fairy tale is really is. My only real beef is the tree didn't get screen credit, but the dance routine in the cafeteria is too die for. I'd put this down as one of my favorite teen comedies. Superstar is super stuff.

I laughed, I cringed, I was awestruck., Fév 18 2002
First off, this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. It's bad, and I liked it, and I refuse to apologize for that.Technically, it's bad for the standard reasons: unrealistic acting, pretty predictable plot, yedda yedda. It's good because, to my mind, the cast and crew knew of the weaknesses and decided to hold up a mirror to teenage ostracism and oddities within that framework. I first saw this film while eating at a restaurant: it came on TV, and the only reason I left is because I was on my lunch break and had to get back to work. I was spellbound. For all this movies faults, Molly Shannon knew what she was doing. She made such a ridiculously lame and pathetic character that pretty much anyone could laugh at her, and yet took pretty much every piece of embarassment and paranoia regarding teen years and trying to fit in, stuffed them into this movie and also made a character who I could sympathize with while thinking, "well, at least I wasn't _that_ bad." A friend of mine actually gave me kudos for being able to sit through this movie for those very reason. She just *won't*, for fear that she'd die of embarassment if she did. And yet, there's a feeling of "and guess what: you got through that part of your life anyway, didn't you?" towards the end of the movie that makes the whole ordeal worthwhile. That's what this is: an ordeal film. It's likable without being, well, artistically good, but you've got to have the stomach for seeing little echos of a nerdy past in it. I guess it's also good therapy: if you can forgive Mary Katherine Gallagher for being the way she is, you can certainly forgive yourself for being a social misfit.

Hilarious in its genre!, Janv. 12 2002
Saturday Night Live star Molly Shannon brings her character Mary Katherine Gallagher to this comedy blast. Mary Kaherine Gallagher just wants a romantic Hollywood kiss. Mary Katherine decides that the only way to be kissed is to become one of those people getting little kisses around campus a lot. When Catholic Teen Magazine holds a talent show at her school, Mary must prove that she has many talents that others have overlooked and she just might fulfill her dreams of becoming a Superstar! Will Ferrel also co-stars as the school popular hunk that all the women faint over and adore. This movie is great for any fan of Mary Katherine Gallagher on SNL or any person looking for a fun-filled riotous comedy.

Good Movie With a Lesson!, Sep 10 2001
Not Bad! Superstar was a great film and not only did it entertain us with Mary Catherine Gallagher (Molly Shannon) acting in her unusaul and weird ways (Making out with a tree, Doing TV impressions) But it also taught us that if you set a goal in life, you should work hard and acheive it, like Mary did! Mary was an Unusual girl, but all her life she wanted a kiss. Not just any kiss, a big, juicy, long kiss like in the movies!! Mary tries her best to convince people that she is a "Superstar" but everytime she tries, people think of her less. Not only is she in love with the same guy that the most popular girl in school is in love with! Don't worry Mary, we still love you! In conclusion, this film really gave me a good laugh.

Stupid but fun - if you haven't already OD'ed on SNL, Oct. 27 2000
I thought this movie was as stupid as it was hilarious - and I am usually a fan of high-brow drama. Some of the reviewers complain that the movie is just a SNL skit on sterois and they were tired of its brand of humor. Well, I have no doubt it's just a full-blown version of a SNL skit but since I haven't watched SNL regularly for quite a while, I actually found the humor quite hilarious. I am not going to pretend it's got great artistic merits, but it gets 4 stars for mindless entertainment value.
