Daughter LOVES it!,
By Bayou Mommy "ijavarela" (Louisiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Annie (DVD)
My daughter, who is alomost 4, absolutely loves this movie. She wants to watch it over & over. We even had to buy the soundtrack to listen to in the car for her. It's much better than the 1982 version for younger children; it's a lot calmer & Miss Hanagan is not as mean. It can get a little annoying for parents, but kids love it.

Much better than the other one,

When I bought this DVD for my 2 daughters, I was pleasantly surprised. The coreography is great, the storyline sticks to the original, and the actors keep the script true to it's original intent. And as an added plus, this version doesn't come across as scary as the original one, which is great for the [impressionable] kids. I give it two thumbs up!!

I have seen the original movie which was good but a bit too long. This version was much better and I enjoyed some of the original songs from the stage version. My favourites were NYC and Something Was Missing sang beautifully by Victor Garber. I also like the dance sequence and singing version of Easy Street with Kathy Bates and Alan Cumming.

"Fun For The Whole Family",
By Terry Richard "Terry Richard" (Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Annie (DVD)
This version of "Annie" is based on the 1982 film of the same name as well as the Broadway musical about a little girl living alone in an orphange being runned by the evil Mrs. Hannigan. A man, named Daddy Warbucks, a millionaire, decides he wants to adopt Annie, but she is determined to find her real parents. Upon hearing the news that Warbucks is willing to pay big money if he can find the little girls parents, Mrs. Hannigan and her co-horts attempt to scam the money from the millionaire by having these co-horts pretend to be Annie's real parents. Kathy Bates, like everything else she does, steals the film as Mrs. Hannigan, and I was surprised at how good Kathy is at singing. This movie was originally broadcast on ABC in 1999 as part of the Walt Disney franchise of TV telefilms. The movie, in turn, won two Emmys for Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Musical Direction. Also, the soundtrack is one of the best. Who can ever forget "Annie" singing "Tomorrow, Tomorrow". Simply, a fantastic film for all generations to enjoy.

The best Annie ever,
By Trevor Street "StreetScape" (Toronto,Canada) - See all my reviews

Impeccably cast, sung and danced. This is the best adaptation of the original Broadway show. Kathy Bates is a hilarious Hannigan (rhymes with harridan), Victor Garber a sweet and lovable Daddy Warbucks and Alan Cumming paired with Kristin Chenoweth, the most delicious scheming singing and dancing villains seen in a long time .Best of all is Alicia Morton as Annie who is uncloying, totally believeable, unaffectingly sincere and hugely talented. Perfect for pre-teens (I put this on at Xmas and they were spellbound for two hours) and anyone who likes musical comedy at its best.

Almost as good as the original; pleasing to watch!,
This review is from: Annie (VHS Tape)
I thought that this movie is a great version of the classic story. Disney did a great job with the dancing and singing, and the acting was pretty good, too.Audra McDonald did a nice job as Grace, but I don't think it was logical for Oliver Warbucks (Victor Garber) to marry another race. The first Annie was much more realistic with that issue. Oscar winner Kathy Bates did an excellent job as the cruel Miss Hannigan, and Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth as Rooster and Lily are also good. The Disney version is more cleaner than the original, and it almost matches up to it. This is a great version of Annie to watch with your family!!

What Was Disney Thinking?,
By J. Hanna (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Annie (DVD)
The 1982 version of Annie was my favorite movie when I was a kid, so after reading the reviews here I was very optimistic about seeing this Disney version. It turned out to be a huge disappointment and I really can't understand how it got any good reviews at all. Sure, the music was nicely recorded and the actress who played Annie was even decent for the role, but the script and other characters demolished any hope of a viable remake. Though many talented actors were present, they were casted terribly. Kathy Bates was nowhere near as good as Carol Burnette in the role of Miss Hannigan. Could she be less scary? The orphans seemed like such brats it made her seem more like the victim rather than the other way around! Also Victor Garber was incredibly unconvincing in the role of the cold hearted, money loving Warbucks. It didn't seem like he was even expected to try. They showed absolutely no development in the relationship between him and Annie so his immediate attachment to her came off as creepy. It practically appeared as if he was going to propose marriage, not ask to adopt her. This was a big mistake because one of the best parts of this story is how Daddy Warbucks starts out as a man so consumed with power and money but slowly realizes that there is more to life through the charm of a dirty little, somewhat homely orphan who would be the least likely person to affect someone of his caliber. None of the villains were even slightly threatening either which gave no victory to the plot in any of the conflict either. Because these elements were completely missing there was no point to the story. Let's not even talk about how ridiculously fast they wrapped up the ending. The historically inaccurate, P.C. portrayal of the 30's was also laughable. It's basically a complete waste of everyone's time so spare yourself the grief.

I love the story, and thought that this version was awesome. The actors cast were perfect and the songs were great. I recommend this DVD with enthusiasm.

A Good Movie, but Once Again Some Good Songs Are Left Out!,
This review is from: Annie (DVD)
I saw the Annie play and I liked it and I also went and saw the theatrical release of the movie that was made in the early 1980s starring Aileen Quinn, Albert Finney, Carol Burnette, Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters and I really like that version and thought they were all great and I have that version on DVD so when I was in a store and I saw the DVD for the Disney remake I bought it and I like it too and I think Alicia Morton, Victor Garber, Kathy Bates, Audra McDonald, Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth were all very good and I enjoyed watching the movie but like the first movie I'm disappointed that some songs from the play were left out and I think this movie could have been a little longer and they should have included the songs that were left out of the 1980's version and a part of me is still hoping that a movie version will be made that will include every song from the original play. Even a filmed version of the stage play would be nice. They often filmed Broadway plays for their archives and now have put out several plays on DVD and video for the general public so I hope that if they filmed the original Annie play starring Andrea McArdle that they will put it out on DVD.
