Glorious Romantic Cello, Nov 4 1998

Maria Kliegel is a superb musician, and her albums of mid-romantic cello sonatas, especially in collaboration with Kristen Merschner, are wonderful for their color and expressiveness as well as their precision and sheer beauty of tone. This album is no exception. The cellist and pianist join in their obvious enjoyment of pieces that (following Beethoven's lead) involve a cooperative venture. The Schubert Sonata is close to the best in the catalog--equal to the legendary Rostropovich/Britten. (The latter are drier and more reflective, while Kliegel/Merschner are more flowing and gorgeous in sound.) And the generous offering of Schumann's pieces makes this an irresistable album. The recorded sound is excellent.
