an excellent CD,

I must confess gay people make me very insecure, but I like Melissa, her songwriting and rough vocals make this an excellent rock album.Every song here is good,no need to program your CD player to skip tracks, let it play all the way through. The production and recording quality are great, provided by Hugh Padgham.Mauricio Fritz Lewak contributes a great drumbeat throughout.

Bottom line: Two awesome songs. Get the singles instead,
This review is from: Yes I Am (Audio CD)
Yes I Am, and Etheridge in general are both severely overrated. The rest of the reviewers here make it sound like Yes I Am is a masterpiece when most of the songs are barely even mediocre. It doesn't make her music profound or emotional just because she's sexually attracted to other women. And it certainly doesn't make her an amazing songstress, because she isn't. I bought Yes I Am for "The Only One" and "Come to My Window", and expected the rest of the songs on the album to be on par with those two singles. How wrong I was. Don't get me wrong, Melissa has a certain passion to her voice when she sings, but most of the songs still sound like filler due to their overall lack of catchiness. None come even close to the two singles I mentioned above. I got Yes I Am in a tape lot at a yard sale. Since I was already familiar with Melissa's two breakthrough hits off Yes I Am, I immediately got that cassette along with her self-titled debut, Never Enough, Brave and Crazy, and Your Little Secret. I've yet to listen to them all, but I've also listened to Brave and Crazy all the way through along with Yes I Am, and Brave and Crazy is even more boring than the filler off this album. As of right now, I'm working my way through Your Little Secret, and the only half-decent song off side one is "I Really Like You". This review is just a warning to those expecting more material that sounds as great as Melissa's two huge hits, because it just ain't there. Excellent songs: -"The Only One" Half-catchy songs that are by no means above average: The rest of the songs are so boring it all meshed into one big bore I can't recall them

A Bare Soul,

Etheridge leaves no rock unturned with this Rock masterpiece. "Yes I Am" is an album that demands an open ear and a heavy heart. The love tunes, "Come to My Window" "The Only One" etc are easily eveloped by the bold "Silent Legacy" and "Talking To My Angels," although they are all great. This is another great album by a wonderful song writer and performer.

Wonderwoman Does It Again!,

Some say that when one comes out with their sexuality, the rest of their heart and soul comes out with it. "Yes I Am" does exactly that. This album has some of the most honest and blunt lyrics I've heard. The song "Yes I Am" accents this honesty the most, saying "if you don't like my sexuality, then go ... yourself!" Other songs, such as "I'm the Only One" and "Come To My Window" yearns for her love to come. That yearning is expressed splendedly! Once you've listened to this album in whole, you should feel the true definition of gay pride.

Solid all the way through,

"I'm the Only One" is a bit corny, but fun nevertheless. The rest is mostly outstanding, with irresistable music and compelling lyrics. Her willingness to offend the sexuality police is refreshing and admirable.

Raw, Hard, Emotional Etheridge,

I have been listening to this CD regularly over the past five or so years. I never tired of Etheridge's haunting lyrics and raw voice. She is truly a gem in the world of disintegrating singer/songwriters. It is hard to find someone of her calibre in today's music world. I highly recommend this CD, as well as Etheridge's newest, "Skin".

Powerfull, Rebellious, yet still vunerable,
By
This review is from: Yes I Am (Audio CD)
This CD was my introduction to the Music of Melissa Etheridge and is still a favorite of mine. Anyone who has struggled with self-identity, most espically sexual identy, or feeling repressed will love this CD, espically "Silent Legacy" which is one of my favorites. "Yes I am" is a song which takes a stand, and is assertive in it's message. "If I wanted to" is rebellious and wild. "Come to my window" is about love and longing. "I will never be the same" is a parents longing for a lost and rebellious child. "All American Girl" is the celebration of the hectic world today's woman deals with. "Talking to my Angel" is about finding acceptance of yourself. Of course, different messages may be interpreted by different people with differing life experiences. This is truly insightfull and powerfull music very well done.

Yes, She Truly Is,

For some reasons in the industry, may radio stations, and media outlets don't give enough credit to the female singer-songwriters in the industry. Nonetheless, in the media today, that is where they've cornered Melissa Etheridge. Since her career started in the mid 80's, Melissa never recieved enough credit for her talents, and sadly in today's music scene, as you have to be thin-looking and anorexic like Britney Spears, and dance all the way like those dopey boy bands, it still shows that same way.Her 1993 breakout album, Yes I Am, reflected Melissa's image, and how difficult it was for her to come into terms with being bisexual. Surprisingly, the industry really welcomed the record. The album is as tough as the rain it came down on. Songs like I Am The Only One, Come To My Window, which its video starred her ex-partner Julie Cypher, and If I Wanted To. Many people still think of Melissa's fall in the industry with artists like the Indigo Girls, and Sarah McLachlan, nevertheless, it is always worth hearing every other time. Hopefully, people will try to see Melissa Etheridge that same way again, radio. |
