5.0 out of 5 stars The Passion of the Godfather
James Brown- now there's a name to conjure with. Funk, Soul, classic R&B, Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker and so much more. Most artists would be hard pressed to fill a single disc of greatest hits without including at least some filler, but not Mr. Brown. He's got four discs of wall to wall hits and classic deep cuts and even as definitive as this set is, he could easily...

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware! Not as funky as you think it will be..
I am troubled by StarTime as it contains at least one whole disk of the early, non-funky, material. For a better collection of James Brown at his funkiest try Make it Funky(1971-75). This cd shows how good JB was even after Bootsy left. I also recommend Funk Power 1970, which highlights the Bootsy Collins era. However, if you like the complete James Brown career...

5.0 out of 5 stars An astonishing retrospective of the greatest soul musician, Feb 27 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Time (4CD) (Audio CD)
Absolutely the best boxed set I've heard--it's sequenced with real attention to flow and listenability. And it kicks. So hard. Like, disc 3 in particular just makes people's jaws drop when I play it for them--"James Brown did _this_? I need some of his records..." STAR TIME includes the lion's share of his hits (though if it had included all of them it would have had to be a few discs longer--remember, this is a man who hit the charts with every [non-holiday/non-instrumental] single he released for ten years, and he was releasing a single just about every month).

In response to somebody's comment below: yes, the first disc is pre-funk stuff. It's AMAZING pre-funk stuff: before he invented funk, James was a phenomenal soul howler.

Seriously: if you're not familiar with JB's work, this is an extraordinary survey of his peak years. And SO much fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grammy Time Box Set- How did they get so much funk in a box?, Feb 10 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Time (4CD) (Audio CD)
I have an extensive collection of cds (if I do say so myself) including a number of box sets. THIS IS THE BEST BOX SET I HAVE EVER HEARD. I put this thing on and I could not leave the room, I was dancing and singing like I hadn't done in 20 years. Everytime I moved to the machine to cut it off -the music made me stop. If you like James Brown and if you can only get one compliation of his work THIS IS THE ONE. There it is, mother popcorn, licking stick, doing it to death, can't stand it, hot pants, soul power and, believe it or not even MORE- so much funk it should be declared a deadly weapon. The godfather strikes again and again and again with his superbad, papa's got a brand new bag, havin a funky good time self 'cause it he made it that way-FUNKY. Don't miss this one and don't let your friends miss it either!!!!!

However, if you like the complete James Brown career with ballads like "Try Me" and "Bewildered" you may like this collection. If you just like the funk, buy the two cds I mentioned above and save about 20 bucks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but....., Nov 12 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Time (4CD) (Audio CD)
This is a must have CD in anybody's collection. However I have stereo versions of such classics as Hot Pants, Papa's got a brand new Bag, Stoned to the Bone, etc. I just question why the stereo verions were not put on the CD. You do notice the difference when listening with headphones.

5 stars is not enough for this monumental work! This is one of those rare box sets that work for a novice or an expert James Brown fan ... in fact, this was the first JB CD I purchased. Wow!!! It changes the way you view rhythm - in classic pieces like "Sex Machine" and "Licking Stick" the rhythm actually becomes melody. Saxes are percussion! And in the middle of it all is JB himself, probably the tighest bandleader since Duke Ellington. Just a hell of a lot of fun to listen to ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Uh! An absolutely essential collection. Oww! Good God!, July 1 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Time (4CD) (Audio CD)
Look no further, THIS is the greatest box set ever produced, and the best of the many JB collections. A peerless retrospective of the most influential American recording and concert artist of all time, covering 4 decades of essential soul, R&B and funk. Irresistable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best James Brown CD to date, Jun 28 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Time (4CD) (Audio CD)
This CD includes the hits of many songs from all different kinds of his albums. The songs range from his great hits like the ballard 'Prisoner of Love' to the soul songs that only he can sing as in 'Get up Sex Machine'. This CD also includes undiscovered hits such as 'Devils Den' and 'Grits'. It also includes 3 different versions of 'Papas got a brand new bag' which I found to be fabulous. This is a Must have CD for those who love 'The Godfather of Soul'. The only dislike is that you have to change CD's.

5.0 out of 5 stars he's always been the best--then, and now, at his crest, Jun 19 2004
This review is from: Star Time (4CD) (Audio CD)
I saw James Brown when I was sixteen. It was the most electrifying performance I had ever seen and I never forgot how his music made me feel. His charisma is as great on this album as it was 35 years hence. I can't stop dancing and it thrills my soul every time I hear it! This guy is the King of Soul and always will be. If you only get one of his CDs, get this one--you'll hear it over and over again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome!!!!!, May 21 2005

This review is from: Star Time (4CD) (Audio CD)
I looked at this boxed set over and over. Should I or Shouldn't I. Finally I bought it. I recently seen The Godfather of Soul in concert. At the age of 71-he was just totally fantastic. Since I have purchased this boxed set-I haven't stopped listening to it. Only one little disappointment tho! I wish as a personal request that he would have put Three Hearts in Tangle on the set instead of (do the) mashed potatoes. But I won't complain. Are you thinking of puchasing this boxed set!! If your a JB' fan by all means buy it.Also give James Brown's Divas a go. That is also a great buy. Especially "Summertime" Kooch!
