5.0 out of 5 stars It's beyond five stars! Eleven thumbs up!
I have to say that pocahontas is the best soundtrack since Chicago! It really is a riot. I didn't think I'd like it, but after sampling one of the first songs, I fell in love. It really is a Virginia Company. The best part is, it's great for the kids and me. I must say that the next time I ever recommend a cd, I will surely mention Pocahontas soundtrack. It is definitely...

3.0 out of 5 stars why is it so short
The song is very beautiful and i dont see why it is so short ( steady as the beating drum, and paint with the colors of the mountain) i really feel they should be a little longer. I mean you want peope to buy the CD but they really cant decide if they want it or not because they dont have enough to listen to, and every one has'nt seen the movie

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack, Mar 5 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Pocahontas (Audio CD)
I casually picked up this soundtrack while in Tower Records a few years ago; I always liked the movie so I figured why not have the soundtrack as well. Admittedly, Manken did not quite capture the magic that was so apparent in "The Little Mermaid" & "Beauty and the Beast", but it still is a marvelous score and the songs are top-class. My favorite instrumental cuts are 'River's Edge' and 'Farewell'. Of the songs, "Colors of the Wind" and "Mine, Mine, Mine" are standouts. This may be a notch below Manken's first three scores for Disney but it's definitely a few notches above his later efforts.

This is a great CD. Although I don't own it myself my friend does
and I think it is wonderful. The music is powerful and moving, and
It sounds like it is from the movie. I give it 5 stars. This is my favorite Disney movie ya know. I recomend this to any Disney
fanatic. I just can't say enough about this CD.
Really it is great. The "Ship At Sea" made me feel as if the waves were crashing all around me. The other songs give you deep
emotions as the songs express. This is truly amazing. The Disney
song writers are amazing. The perform to the fulest.
Anyway I definatley rate this 5 stars. I would rate it Infinity
stars if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars "HEAVY" Music for a Disney film!, Oct 27 2002

During the "rediscovery" of the animated musical following the success of "The Little Mermaid", there have been some memorable melodies and theme songs that have been embedded in the collective minds of all that have seen and listened. Many have their favorites and I am no different from them.

The score to "Pocahontas" ranks at the top of my list. Alan Menken, who had so masterfully added music to the lyrics of his late partner Howard Ashman, worked with lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The pair fashioned four of the most deliberate and passionate songs to ever grace a Disney film.

The Academy-Award winning "Colors of the Wind" is presented in its original form, featuring Judy Kuhn (vocals for the title character) as well as the pop release sung by Vanessa Williams, heard over the end credits. Both are befitting a story line heavy with an ecological mindset.

Mel Gibson the singer? Well, he does a more-than-adequate job on "Mine", a duet with David Ogden Stiers. This composition has the actors' respective characters engaged in a vocal "duel" over the fate of the land in this New World. IT is one great tune.

"Savages" is a tour de force for the composers. It is never preachy but is a determined and not-so-subtle look at prejudice.

The "love ballad", also heard at the end credits roll has to be the most hypnotic ever done by the studio. "If I Never Knew You" is too beautiful for words, and the pairing of Jon Secada and Shanice could not have been more appropriate. They are vocal magic.

For sheer majesty, the cut entitled "Farewell" works for me. It is heard as the ship carries the wounded "John Smith" away from his beloved Pocahontas. The strings swell as the Native American maiden runs to the hilltop to bid him "adieu". At the ledge of the cliff, the girl waves for the last time.

The music heard, like most of the score, just sends the clichéd "chill up my spine".

Do you get the idea that I like this disc?

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful music, Sep 5 2002
This review is from: Pocahontas (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite Disney masterpiece soundtracks. A lot of people don`t even like the movie "Pocahontas" anyway, but I think that without the incredible music it has the movie never would have been enoyed half as much. (Which could be true about many Disney animated movies, but apparantly from some opinions I`ve read, this was the only one that really needed it.)
The vocal songs and the score meld together perfectly. You can`t draw a line between the "sing-alongs" and the score; both are very beautiful. My favorite part of the CD is the beginning of "Listen To Your Heart II." In the film, this is the part when John Smith first sees Pocahontas and there`s a long stretch of silence as they just look at eachother. I think this is also my favorite moment of the movie. And, thanks to the magic of composer Alan Menken, this is probably not a coincidence at all.
I also love the end of "Farewell." It`s the conclusion of the movie and the most beautiful music on the soundtrack. Every time I listen to it I get chills. And how old am I...?

This cd is really good. The music makes me feel like I'm there- in America hundreds of years ago. The song entitled SAVAGES is very good and really brings out how unfairly the Europeans judged the Native Americans. I love the tunes to the music.

Pocahontas is the story about a brave but strong girl who follows her own path and doesn't want any one making up her mind for her. But when she finds out that John Smith a friend of hers is captured for injuring Koccum an indian brave sent out to protect Pochontas. When Grandmother Willow tells her to go and save her friend from her father, Her father's tribe is at war with these humans from England who are sent out to settle there land. This cd is pretty because I think that it's all about the history and spirit of how the indians survived. Colors of the wind is a song that also says that you can paint with all of the colors. What the song is telling that you can't tear up the earth by cutting down everything. Pocahontas told this to John Smith and now they try to stop the war. But John Smith who actually gets wounded when the general of the british is all but being greedy uses an arrow and stabs John Smith. So what the story is telling us not to follow our hearts it's also with our words as well. Grandmother Willow tells Pocahontas to follow what's right in her heart if she wants to stop this war between her people and the strangers from the north.
