4.5 but I rounded up,

This review is from: Mama Said Knock You Out (Audio CD)
This is the only LL Cool J album I own, but it is a good one. LL Cool J has a very strong delivery and he raps with aggression (especially on "Mama Said Knock You Out"). His also includes songs with a message such as "The Power Of God" which is about keeping faith in god, "Illegal Search" which is about police brutality, and "Cheesy Rat Blues" which is about people that are fake and only care about money. The only thing about this album that isn't up to par is the production. It isn't terrible, but it's not spectacular either, however LL Cool J's lyrics more then make up for that. My personal favorite tracks are "Mama Said Knock You Out", "Around The Way Girl", "Jingling Baby [Remixed But Still Jingling]", and "Milky Cereal".

HIP-HOP WITH AN EDGE,

This review is from: Mama Said Knock You Out (Audio CD)
This cd is a CLASSIC in every sense of the word. Bangin beats and incredible lyrics make up a successful cd. This one has both. Right from the start with "Boomin System" and through "The Power Of God" the music here grabs your attention and won't let go. A must have for any true hip-hop fan. Add this to your collection....

L continues to disappoint on his 4 album. LL is a dynamite lyracist with substandard production. This album and Walking are proof of that.

Replete with the 3 R's -- rhyme, rhythm and reason - this album by Mr Cool is distinguished also by its humour. There are lots of very good songs lurking beneath the rap which makes his music palatable even to those not into hiphop. Mr Good Bar contains some hilarious declarations while elsewhere LL proves that rap can be every bit as soulful as, well, soul music. That doesn't mean he's lost his roar - the titl track and Illegal Search are sizzling roots rap pieces bobbing on a funk train. There's also some gospel rap on the last track!

"KNOCKS OUT" THE COMPETITION,
By Balogun (Catonsville, MD) - See all my reviews

"I'm gonna knock you out! Mama said knock you out!"--so goes the famous chorus from the blazing title track, in which LL exalts himself (which is not unusual) and hurls a few darts at Kool Moe Dee. He also snaps at him in "Eat 'Em Up L Chill" and "To The Break of Dawn", in which he also disses Ice-T and MC Hammer. Well deserved, considering that this is an outstanding album; probably the best in LL's career so far. Legendary producer Marley Marl lends a funky, bass-heavy sound to LL, whose songs on MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT range from tantalizing ("Around the Way Girl", "Mr. Good Bar", "6 Minutes of Pleasure") to threatening ("Murdergram", "Mama Said Knock You Out", "To The Break Of Dawn"). LL also drops words of wisdom-- for example, in "Illegal Search", he discusses police brutality; in "Cheesy Rat Blues", he brilliantly employs storytelling techniques to teach caution amongst fairweather friends. And the bland "Jingling Baby" from the WALKING WITH A PANTHER album has been turned into a jingling remix. Judging from the superior sound of MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT, LL Cool J definately adhered to his mama's advice.

I am not much of a rap fan but "Mama Said Knock You Out" is just such an intense song you cannot help but get pumped up when you hear it. If you can find it anywhere else on a compliation or Best of then go for it unless you like LL more.

Future Of The Funk,
By A Customer

Uncle L. has always done his best work when he's been with a talented producer with a singular creative vision. Marley Marl, the "Quincy Jones of Rap" fits with L's style like yin and yang. Marley's signature East Coast funk stamp is all over this album, from straight-up street anthems ("Mama Said Knock You Out")to the odes to infidelity ("6 Minutes of Pleasure"), to De-La inspired metaphorical buggedness ("Milky Cereal"). My favorite track, though, has to be "Mr. Good Bar". The production of this track is Marley Marl at his best, and L's playboy lyrics could turn the biggest social misfit on your block into Hugh Hefner. I hope Mr. Smith (LL) and Mr. Williams (Marley) reunite soon. Hip-Hop needs them.

This album brings back so many memories. I remember I was like in elementary school when the album came out and I started listening to it and I loved it ever since. My favorites are "Around The Way Girl" and "Illegal Search". Good CD. Oh yeah, by the way, this album has tons of bass, B'Ware!
