ABSOLUTELY THE BEST HEAVY METAL ALBUM IN THE 90S,
By
This review is from: Metallica (Audio CD)
I've heard all the arguments that Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction and Skid Row's Slave to the Grind were the best metal albums in the 90s and for the most part, those two albums were brilliant. There is one metal album that stands alone in the 90s as the best metal album. Metallica's self-titled album is the best album. Metallica's Black Album is a masterpiece. From the classic ballad "Nothing Else Matters" to the fast-paced "Wherever I May Roam", "Enter Sandman" and "The Unforgiven". Metallica delivered the goods in the 90s and this album blows Motley Crue's self-titled album in 1994 out of the water. Forget Nirvana's Nevermind. Forget Alice in Chains. Metallica's Black album and the innovative set Use Your Illusion I and II from Guns N' Roses rank as the best metal albums in the 90s. Metallica finally achieved a #1 album with the BLack album and a #1 single in Canada with Enter Sandman.METALLICA'S BLACK ALBUM IS A MASTERPIECE. Dave Mustaine will have to settle for second place.

Like everyone else, I will qualify my 'Metallica credentials' by announcing what type of fan I am. I listened to this band in 1984 when "Kill 'Em All" ripped my head off and left me crying for mother's milk. I admit, these guys boggled the mind. But it was 1984...and I did grow to like them. The next 2 albums mindblowing. "Ride the Lighting" is impeccable. MOP is amazing. "...And Justice for All" a great album. As a whole this band was certainly the most complete band of the 1980's. It is in this context how 'Black Album' must be listened to. The songwriting is hit and miss, moreso than AJFA, which has a few misses. Some songs are just not good ("Of Wolf and Man"). But what's missing here is that unparalled Bay Area feel of the albums (many older fans will know from whence I speak). The sound everyone tried to copy, but could only be done by a few select bands, of which Metallica led the charge. This album has a few high points. But Bob Rock is without a doubt the worst producer for a band such as this. If you don't beleive me, check out 'Rock and Hyde.' Or maybe check out Metallica's latest album ("Some Kind of Monster"?). This album is in my view, the turning point for Metallic. Where the division bell tolls. People who cite this album as their best missed the days waiting with bated breath for the next thrash album by Metallica (the 'Black Album' is not thrash). It is the best of the rest, and that is all. If you yearn for the old sounds Metallica, perhaps pray. Or perhaps buy Exodus' "Tempo of the Damned," a "Kill 'Em All"-like thrashfest. All hope is not lost however; D. Mustaine resurrected himself with a great album recently ("The System Has Failed"). Perhaps Metallica should take some advice from Mr. Mustaine--'if it's broke, you better damn well fix it!.'

I'll be brief. The album is a classic as it is. Now put this into a 24 bit Suround or stereo sound, recording quality is fantastic. A must have if your looking to replace your abused cd version and your DVD player can play the DVD audio format.

Almost perfect. This isnt' the metallica i used to know...but dammit i'm lovin it. NO. THis album is NOT thrash metal. NO this album is not all really upbeat. NO this album is not how metallica used to play. BUT this is an amazing album...all the songs are AWESOME. It is truly inspiring.1)Enter Sandman - used to be a good song...but now it is so overrated and overplayed. It gets tiring! cool solo! - 7.5/10 2)Sad But True - Really cool song...i like the heavy guitar riff. The lyrics are strong...overall strong song. - 9.5/10 3)Holier than thou - I love this song. One of my favs on the album. Really up-beat, great lyrics (look harder). I love the bass in this song. - 10/10 4)THE UNFORGIVEN - INCREDIBLE SONG!!! Slow...moving...strong lyrics...great guitar solo. THe guitar solo in this song was improvised...that just goes to show how great kirk is. this song is incredible...much better than the 2nd one. 10/10 5)wherever i may roam - cool song. This song is done on some weird bass...10 or 12 string. I really like this song. It's underrated. - 10/10 6)Don't Tread on ME - Cool song...my least fav on the album. but still great. I don't much like the guitar solo. Although the drummin is bang on...and james vocals are intimidating...8.5/10 7)Through The Never - hahaha really cool song. I love the part in the middle: "...on through the never we must gooo..." It kicks ass :) 10/10 8)Nothing Else Matters - aaah. Nothin else matters. Great song. The lyrical masterpiece, the guitar greatness...this song is amazing. It's slow, with a heavy ending (of course a guitar solo). One of my favorites. - 10/10 9)Of WOlf and Man - cool song...cool lyrics...cool drumbeat...just overall cool song. 9/10 10)The God That Failed - Wicked bass intro. The drum beat is badass. The guitar solo is EARSPLITTING!!!! Mindblowing really. I love this song...the lyrics are deep. (Much deeper than most of you will understand...you really have to know james to understand this song) 10/10 11)My Friend of Misery - pretty good song...great guitar solo. overall really good song - 9/10 12)Struggle Within - One of the best on the album...heavy and up beat. I love this song. - 10/10 Overall this is an amazing album. It's not quite like the old thrash metal metallica...but it is quite good. It doesn't get old. I've listened to this album ever since i was 9 (i'm almost 15).

Its Good Enough,

This album came out in 1991, but by that point in time little 12 year olds were wearing Metallica t-shirts so I never got around to listening to this album until 2004.As for all the people who say Metallica sold out with this album i don't belive that to be true. People bought into Metallica at that point in time and especailly this album. I think its a good album, but i give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the two loser songs on it, what are they called, The Unforgiven, and, Nothing Else Matters, like what are they doing on a Metallica album anyways, they should have been b-sides or something and those two songs totally drag down the album, but remove those two songs and its a five star album. I mean this album is over 20 years old now and to the people who say Metallica sold out, they should really have a strong definition of what selling out is, i mean how is, Enter Sandman, selling out, it doesn't sound like any of the mindless generic pop fluff that was floating around in 1991,and my god was there a lot of it back in 1991, just look at the charts, or todays mindless generic pop fluff for that matter. But i do know when Metallica was playing concerts in 1991 they were three hours long and they rocked the universe and i don't think many people were complaining about Metallica selling out after they left one of the concerts. UPDATE JANUARY 8th 2012 They now say this album by Metallica is the biggest selling album of the last 20 years, 1991 - 2011, and of course so many people hate to hear that and can't understand why thier top 40 friendly band isn't the #1 selling album. Well Metallica is #1 and like i said its good enough. FOUR STARS |
