5.0 out of 5 stars MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ALBUM/CD!
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young are, in my opinion the best blend of harmonizers and the highest caliber of musical talent in creation. I love them! One reviewer notes that this is a landmark, ground breaking collection. He is right. The incredible lyrics of such songs as "Wooden Ships," which is a call to one's social...

3.0 out of 5 stars Where is my record?
I just purchased this cd because records are no longer used in our house. The turn tables are all broken and the records are just collecting dust. This was an old album I bought in the late 70's And played it all the time. The songs are all great, every one a masterpiece no question. I put in the new cd and what I got was a HUGE letdown. The sound is flat, compressed...

One reviewer notes that this is a landmark, ground breaking collection. He is right. The incredible lyrics of such songs as "Wooden Ships," which is a call to one's social conscience, "Woodstock," (which they snatched away from Joni Mitchell and made their own), and "4 + 20" remain nonpareil to this day. They provide a rich harmony, lyrics that complement the listeners' intelligence and they just plain sound good. This is my favorite album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always my favorite, Jan 12 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Deja Vu (Audio CD)
Deja Vu was the first CSNY record i recieved and the first of all of my records that I completely fell in love with. It was a gateway album into a whole new genre of music, and though it is not the first of the great rock super-group, it led me into exploring all the other albums of CSN, CSNY, all the individual members , groups that they came from and groups with similar sounds. But no matter what, this group of four incredibly talented musicians have a sound unlike any other that cannot be measured up to. First of all the group is perfect with just its mix of four able to be lead voices singing so strong alone and then together with beautiful and moving harmonies and sounds. But then take that and add groovy full fledged feeling guitars and keys, poetic and beautifully written lyrics, and drums and bass from greg reeves and dallas taylor, and its a group that is so solid and together and this is an incredibly solid and awesome album that i love and will never get tired of. If I had to have only one cd, this would be the one. Though some of the songs are mentioned more often than others, the greatest songs i feel are Carry On with its variety of sound and and changes and thier kick-ass version of Joni Mitchell's Woodstock. But this album just has such a variety of songs and sounds from the rockin guitar and vocals of Almost Cut My Hair, the songs with that sound that only Graham Nash has like Our House, Neil Youngs more mellow tunes with beautifullly written lyrics like Helpless, and the groovy and thoughtful Teach Your Children. The album ends on a great note with Nash and Stills' Everybody I Love You. The whole album is great from start to finish. All of the songs are perfectly written and the sounds just bring you right back to Woodstock and the music of the time. I love every single song on this album but I really can't give the ambum justice from writing a review, so all I can say is to get it! And then be sure to get the first(before Neil Young joined) and then get them all! Dig it

5.0 out of 5 stars What happened to Wolfie's review?!, Oct 15 2008
By

This review is from: Deja Vu (Audio CD)
I recently read an absolutely wonderful review of this album by "Wolfie". See; I even remember the name. I was so stirred by his evocotive musings on the times when this album came out that I actually wrote a comment praising the review and his writing while bemoaning the state of things today. Just now I was going to show the review and my comments to a friend and Lo! It's gone! The review is no longer there!! It and my comments no longer exist. I scrolled through 9 pages twice and IT IS GONE!Is it possible that it was removed as being inappropriate?! That's the only thing I can think of. Because if that's the case I'm signing off from this idiot-fest for the last time. I can understand something overly vulgar being removed for the sake of our ever-fragile children's minds but COME ON! The man wrote of remembering some smoke and a van! Was it my comments that got it axed? Has it come down to this?!?!?!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars David Crosby's voice, Stills, Nash and Young's harmonies, Oct 2 2002
This review is from: Deja Vu (Audio CD)
A Truly lovely album however you are feeling at the time, because it is about the 'beautiful things, peace, love and harmony.
When I first heard the song 'Carry On' I knew I was listening to a beautiful song just from the introduction, its amazing how wonderful the vocals are on this song, just listen and you will hear for yourself, its magical haunting and brilliantly sung, equally as good is 'Deja vu' with its incredibly haunting atmosphere, truly a masterpiece of perfection. When he sings, "We've all been here before" I can imagine the feeling because I have encountered Deja vu (won't go into that here). And what about "Almost Cut My Hair", gorgeous song with those wonderful hippy lyrics, he sings it with such raw emotions, that I can feel deep inside of me. Although there is a song that goes much deeper inside, really deep down inside, and that song is "4 + 20" sung by Stephen Stills, in his deep manly voice that is full of emotion, deep emotion, its about finding, losing, searching, and the sadness that is felt from within his heart, its so meaningful
Its more then a song, its a man opening up about the way he feels inside. 'Woodstock' is lovely, I think it is even better then the original one, by Mathews Southern Comfort (their version was also outstanding) its their harmonies, they are great. I love Neil Young's 'Helpless' its the way he sings, with that distinctive lilt in the voice, just makes me feel really good to hear someone who sings so loud and yet in total harmony. Songs 11. 12. 13 and 14, I do not have on my version of the CD, but I do know the song 'long time gone' its from their very first album
and its truly lovely, with David taking lead vocals, yes I like this song very much, he sings out loud and clear, just love it.
The songs I have not mentioned are also songs that I still like its just that they don't get so deep inside, hope you like this review, thank you for reading it, and hope you buy the album, because it really is on a higher plane.

Though they have released other fine albums, this is the best from these four legends. What else would you expect from former members of "The Byrds", "The Hollies", and "Buffalo Springfield"? Included are the classic tracks "Carry On", "Teach Your Children", "Our House", and "Woodstock". The others are all good too however. If you looking for this same quality of record without "Neil Young" (why would you do that), check out the debut from "Crosby Stills & Nash", it's just as good. Also the short but great "So Far" collection is roughly the best of these two albums. All of these releases will make you feel like you're in the 70's again. I think that's called "Deja Vu".

5.0 out of 5 stars A quintessential album, Jun 12 2004

This set may be well considered the best work of this unforgettable ensemble.
This album contains the real essence of the seventies. Filled with inspiration, and overall, commitment. This quartet was one of the top ten notable bands in USA , original sound , lyrics and wildness, charming and rebelness , country folk and wonderful songs . Think in Our house , a superb ballad , in contrast you have Woodstock .
This work is a must in your collection and in my personal opinion , one of the twenty most influyent albums in the rock music in any age.
Don't forget this team worked out in Woodstock and became one the most shinning stars in that unique musical meeting in 1969.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Album Is CSNY's Defining Statement, Jun 4 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Deja Vu (Audio CD)
DEJA VU is Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's defining statement. With Neil Young having overcome three handicaps (epilepsy, diabetes, polio) to add a little muscle to the original trio, this album combines hard rock and ballads with enormous success. This album defined not only CSNY, but a whole post-Woodstock generation, and is essential to any folk-rock collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, May 21 2004
This review is from: Deja Vu (Audio CD)
This is a classic recording. If there was one album that gives that quintesential feel for what the 60's were all about...it's this one. The music and lyrics are golden.

This was the number one choice of Theta Chi at Ripon College in the late 70's.

5.0 out of 5 stars among the three best all time albums, May 2 2004

This is not a concept album but a collage of very fine songs. The less fine is "woodstock", a classic of miss mitchell...
Arrangements and chorus are at the maximum level.
Carry on is among the five songs in the history of rock.
This album contains also a wonderful "a solo" by john sebastian.

Of all the CSN and CSNY records to own, this is it. Forget the compilations and other permutations of the group. This is the strongest recording with their strongest songs as a group.
