This is one of the last few albums the band made before they started incorportating keyboards.Must admit when I first bought this Lp back in summer of '80 I had heard only one song and that was Tush. For me this LP satisfied my curiousity.Very rich in the blues. Not a dull moment here. After this I began my odyssey back to their older albums.Hardest working band at the time-touring all the time.

This is super material and performances but the CD is too short. I would have liked to see at least a couple of bonus tracks or live cuts.

Nice record, but don't buy the "best ZZ album" hype,

Ok folks, time for a real review rather than just a big fan air kiss.Deguello. This LP marked the trios return to the active limelight from a several year hiatus. The results at times are excellent while others previewed the MTV fuzzy guitar "we sing of cars and girls with big boobs" schtick era that was soon to come. "Maniac Mechanic" and "Esther be the One" are examples of this. These two songs foreshadow where the band is going artistically (or was it just Billy G?). There are strong bows to thier earlier 70s works with instant ZZ classics like "Cheap Sunglasses" and "I'm Bad I'm Nationwide." While lyrically not as good as the London era recordings. These efforts redeem the record and make it a worthy purchase. The cover of Elmore James "Dust My Broom" is also pretty good. Overall, compared with the highwater mark of the early 70s this album is a departure but still has enough honest and rockin' qualities to keep it a nice addition. Its after this album it all goes to hell.

A great blues classic,

Deguello is a blues based album and is surprisingly popular, I say that because ZZ's more blues based albums like Tejas are not as popular as more rock based albums like Tres Hombres. The solo's on this album could only be played by a professional. This album has a really great atmosphere. The songs don't seem to be about Texas but Bad, Nationwide is a preminition of what was to come with Eliminator. The production is great, I think the best produced ZZ TOP album. EVerything is in perfect proportion. Manic Mechanic is a great off the wall number. As I said, only a really professional guitar player could play these solo's. My favourite? Hi Fi Mama, Dusty sounds like Little Richard and along with SHe likes my Automobile, is the most passionate songs. The only flaw in this album is it doesn't have all that much passion and fire, but nothing is less than great. The best songs? After Hi Fi and Auto, I'd say I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide, Lowdown in the street and Cheap Sunglasses.

The Last "Great" ZZ TOP Album...,

Arguably the best album the group ever made. ZZ Top's defining muscial moment; and a must have for ANY music fan. Billy Gibbons "guitar-slinger" attitude and playing have never been better. Ya' got the real drum kit, the tube amps and no electronic-synthesizer mumbo jumbo to be found. If you need to buy one ZZ Top album...this is the one.

Billy Gibbons, Billy Gibbons, Billy Gibbons! Thats all I have to say. I mean the man can play the hell out of a guitar! He has to be one of the top players of all time. Deguello to me is ZZ Top's best album to date. They have had a lot of good ones but this tops them all! On This one everything is perfect. All the songs are winners, all the emotion and all the passion that goes along with making a good rock and roll record is here. I would have to say that the best song is 'Cheap Sunglasses' I mean come on what a song, the lyrics are great and the guitar solos are brilliant as only the great Billy Gibbons could play them! The only song that isnt almost perfect is 'Dust My Broom' but thats fine and Ok because it doesnt take away from the rest of the album. This was the last great ZZ Top album before they went and got all MTV on us. If you want good ZZ Top and I mean GOOD ZZ Top then Deguello is the album for you to start your collection with.

A blues classic,
By
This review is from: Deguello (Audio CD)
Deguello is a modern blues classic and ranks with Tres Hombres and Eliminator among their best albums. ZZ Top are clearly at their best as a raw blues band and on Deguello they are at their best. Billy Gibbons's vocals and guitar playing sound inspired throughout and the rhythm section of Dusty Hill and Frank Beard are so tight, you can set your watch to them. Every track here is great with a few ranking among their best. "Cheap Sunglasses" and "I Thank You" are the most popular tracks and are absolutely stunning. The former contains a killer riff and contains some excellent playing by Gibbons during the song's outro. The latter is a cover of the old Sam & Dave song which the band do extremely well. Other excellent tracks include "A Fool For Your Stockings", "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide", "Esther Be The One". "Hi-Fi Mama" and "Manic Mechanic". There's also an outstanding cover of Elmore James' "Dust My Broom". ZZ Top would never be as raw as this again as they would add synthesizers to their sound starting with the Eliminator album. While albums after this one would sell millions more copies, none of them have aged as well as Deguello. Highly recommended to all fans of the blues.

One of the very best,

The general concensus among critics seems to be that "Tres Hombres" is ZZ Top's finest album.Well, I disagree. "Tres Hombres" is a fine album, but "Degüello" is better. Not by much, sure, but it has a stronger selection of songs, with more of them being instantly memorable, such as the delightful blues-n'-boogie of "Cheap Sunglasses", "Fool For Your Stockings" and "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide". It's not perfect, sure, not everything is great, but nothing is less than good, and "Degüello" is one of the few truly essential purchases for any ZZ Top fan. |
