Funkateers, join the "partyup",

I've been revisiting a lot of Prince's stuff in the wake of his new album and recent acquisition of his HITS/B Side 3 disc set. "Dirty Mind" is the type of album that I was unable to fully appreciate when it came out.(...) Listening to it again, this album is a rocking electrofunk that pushes the envelope lyrically. "Head", "Uptown", and "Partyup" are all out funk jams. Clean guitars trade jabs with popping slap bass on these tracks. And the man just lays down on the one. Prince would have better selling albums and later stuff vaulted him into superstar status and pop trailblazer. But if you want to see the best of pre-"Purple Rain" Prince at his funkiest with tight songs, this is the album to go with.-5 stars

turn of a decade,

I would say this was a great way to start out the 80's- a nice risque album complete with the "dirty" cover. This was never one of my favorite Prince albums yet it still had an amazing amount of playtime in my stereo. I like every song- my favorites are "Do it All Night" and "Head". However, I never appreciated "Gotta Broken Heart Again" until I heard him perform it recently. I have to admit I slept on this one- it's a fine piece of work that defined the sincere sexuality and talent to expect from a star in the making. If you want to dig into the past for music that opened the doors to a new sound of funk, pick up "Dirty Mind"

What many consider to be Prince's breakout album,

Prince's third album, "Dirty Mind", was/is quite an album. It has great music and lyrics that leave little, very little to the imagination. and then there's the cover...... The album starts off with the title track, which is safe enough (lyricly), and has a killer synth line done by band member Dr. Fink (matt fink). Nothing outstanding, but not too shabby either.Next there's "when you were mine" (later covered by Cyndi Lauper), which is sheer pop perfection. Truly Prince at his best. Very reminicent of 60s pop, but still unique."Do it all night" is up next. I think the title pretty much tells you what this song is about. Nothing too special about this one, the "dud" of this album. Now there's "gotta broken heart again", the ballad. Great vocal delivery."Uptown" is next, one of Prince's first minor "hits".Great synth.Aw, here we go, now we're onto "head". And yes, i know what you're thinking----you're right. Very funky, sexually frank song. A song that would pave the way for quite possibly one of Prince's favorite subjects. Here he shares vocals with new band member Lisa coleman. Girl had guts. Now moving onto "sister". Seems safe enough, right? Well, nope, it 's not. Pretty far from it infact. It's a 1 minute and 33 second long song about incest. Enough said. The last song, "partyup" is an anti war song written by Morris Day. Day gave Prince permission to use the lyrics in exchange for a record deal.Somewhat rowdy and angry, this'll surely bring out you're inner punk.Great album, but don't play this if you have prudes or kids around. You've been warned.

This is where it begins.,

Prince begins here. His first two albums merely hint at this epic of raw (as in sexual) but polished (as in production) kinetic pop-rock, with both punk and "new-wave" influences. This is the first record with his trademark "Minneapolis" sound. This is his first record to unleash his blazing guitar licks on the unsuspecting public. He goes from being a tease ("I Wanna Be Your Lover", 'I Feel For You'") to being shockingly blunt ("Head", Sister"). And (...) is this catchy. Hooks like velcro. The announcement to the world at large of a major star, soon to hit supernova four years later with "Purple Rain." By the way, isn't time to remaster this catalog? Hmm? Warners? Anybody?

Diverification of Funk and Pop/Rock,

Blend these two styles together with a delicious DIY ethic and you've got 'Dirty Mind'.One of Prince's less produced albumsit brims with synth-heavy new-wave such as the the tital song, "Do It All Night",the disturbing "Sister" and the wonderfully Beatlesqe "When You Were Mine" highlite this collection.Of course "Uptown","Partyup" and the deep groove of "Head" that point the way to Prince's best era soon to come while "Gotta broken Heart Again" is classic Stax/Atlantic Records Soul balladeering. "Dirty Mind" is as such a VERY hard album to overrate!

THIS IS THE ALBUM THAT BROKE PRINCE INTO THE MAINSTREAM (NOT PURPLE RAIN) I WAS LISTENING TO BLONDIE, THE CARS ETC AND WAITING FOR WHEN A BLACK ARTIST WOULD DO SOMETHING NU WAVISH. I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD BE SO FUNKY, SOULFUL, SEXY AND POWERFUL. THIS ALBUM DOESN'T EVEN LAST 40 MINUTES AND THERE'S NO FILLER FROM THE TITLE TRACK TO THE CARS -LIKE "WHEN YOU WERE MINE" TO THE JAZZ - SOUL LIKE "GOTTA BROKEN HEART AGAIN", ON SIDE TWO(OPPS) I HAVE THIS ON CD NOW. HE GETS DOWN AND FUNKY NU WAVE STYLE WITH SONGS THAT WOULD MAKE YOU BLUSH, FROM INCEST TO ORAL SEX AND A ANTHEM LIKE "PARTYUP" PRINCE THROWS THE FUNK DOWN HARD. I TELL PEOPLE THIS ALBUM IS BETTER THAN PURPLE RAIN GET IT NOW!!!!!

Prince pulled out all the stops with this one. My mother banned me from seeing him perform after hearing the album, but I got older and went to all the other shows. (smile) The grooves and not to mention the racy lirics is enough to sign you up as a fan for life. The title track "Dirty Mind" gives you a preview of what's in store, in addition to "Sister" and "Head" "When You Were Mine is just down right cute. But my ultimate favorite is "Gotta Broken Heart Again (it will make you wish you were there to wipe away his tears).

An early Prince masterpiece, setting the stage for the many great albums to come. Has the classics "Dirty Mind" and "When U Were Mine", but is great the whole way through. Must Buy!

Little Ditties From the 80s,
By
This review is from: Dirty Mind (Audio CD)
This is one of Prince's earlier CDs, of which I am not such a great fan. Don't get me wrong it's still good music, but a very short CD, just over thirty minutes. And the songs here don't have a whole lot to them, you know, crazy guitars and other instruments that the current Prince is famous for. The lyrics are interesting enough, I guess. If you are a fan of the early 80s material, a big Price fan, or maybe a music historian looking to discover where music started getting lowdown and dirty, then go for this album. Otherwise, go for the later Prince stuff.

His First Masterpiece!,

For You and Prince could not compare to his third album, the masterpiece Dirty Mind. Neither of those albums provided such a great showcase for Prince's musical talents. Best songs are Dirty Mind and When You Were Mine. Definitly worth buying, it will be right at home in your Prince collection.
