Missing...Presumed Having.. by Notting Hillbillies
this is a unusual cd, the music is diverse blues, country, soul, and blue grass. Excellent musicianship, they are players. Every song on this album has strength. i love the steel guitar. Listen to the album all the through then decide. check them out.

The content, riffs and character of this album remind me of another great milestone in country-blues swing...an album by Vassar Clements ( Hillbilly Jazz).... except this is mellow and bluesy with great interwoven guitar filler and licks.

I listen to the album all the way through whenever I play it. It was a great find for me as both a Knopfler fan and a lover of Hillbilly jazz/blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good listening, Sep 6 2011

Good guitarists having fun with their music. How could it be better? Even for an English take on bluegrass tunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, April 23 2004
This review is from: Missing...Presumed Having.. (Audio CD)
Take four Brits who call themselves "The Notting Hillbillies" and you'd expect a parody of American country music or -- worse -- slavish imitation. Not so with The Notting Hillbillies; they've made a CD that's dignified and classy and country-tinged. This is a CD that is original enough to listen to over and over.

I especially liked the first and last songs on the CD. "Railway Worksong" features extraordinary bluegrass banjo, guitar, and steel guitar runs and a strong vocal. I would assume that most of the fancy guitar work is by Mark Knopfler. The steel guitar is played by an American, Paul Franklin, who's as good as they come. The second great song is "Feels like Going Home" which is bluesy and sung a bit like a hybrid of Joe Cocker and Van Morrison. The notes to the CD, unfortunately, don't identify which of the Notting Hillbillies is the lead singer of these two songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing CD, July 24 2003
This review is from: Missing...Presumed Having.. (Audio CD)
I was browsing customer reviews on Dire Straits. I bought this CD 11 years ago and I have not parted with it since. This is an amazing collection of some of the best songs that I have ever heard....It is not just Mark Knopfler here...but the band. Get this CD because it is rare. Check out some of the duets of Mark Knopfler with Chet Atkins...they will blow your little mind.

This is one of my favorite records. If you are looking for deep, melodic, soothing blues, folk and gospel, then look no further. A great record for long road trips.

I heard "Sweet Dreams" on NPR one night and next day went to Amazon.com to find out about it. Bought it and have not stopped playing it since. I do not agree with "if you liked this, try this". None of the suggested albums are anything like "Presumed... This CD is truly sweet and slow and dreamy.

I bought this, along side the MK Chet Atkins 'neck and neck' on cassette, and wore them BOTH OUT. I am going to repurchase both of these on cassette and burn them to hard drive and toss them on my RIO RIOT. See, I just plugged like two other products. I really love this CD. I am not into country, and this should not be labeled as such, it is music. great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are a JJ Cale freak... get this, Oct 5 2002
This review is from: Missing...Presumed Having.. (Audio CD)
This album all but proves that Mark Knopfler was heavily influenced by JJ Cale. The slightly witty lyrics, the smooth melodic harmonies with just a touch of an edge, the laid back guitar that somehow keeps you entranced. One of those albums to take on a long road trip or to a desert island. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars instant classic, Jan 21 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Missing...Presumed Having.. (Audio CD)
If you enjoy, and I mean LOVE, brilliant guitarists at play, expressive vocals, and understanding every word, then this CD is for you. This collection of traditional folk/blues numbers are as vibrant and edgy today as when they were originally written and left me aching for more! A refreshing change from the usual noise heard today's radio.
Every note is a gem!
