This is a great CD of her softer songs. You will not dance to this CD, but will find a very strong compilation.

The Ballads,
By Jake Z "holden84" (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Something to Remember (Audio CD)
This is a collection of Madonna's best ballads. There are 10 of her ballad hits, and some new tracks. I think that her version of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" is the best cover song she's ever done. The video clip is good too, very rarely seen but it's beautiful. She also updates "Love Don't Live Here Anymore", which was originally from her 1984 album LIKE A VIRGIN. The new version is nice I guess. The other new song is a David Foster ballad, the acoustic "One More Chance", which shows off her vocals a little more. This album obviously was released to try to recoup some of her fans she lost over the EROTICA and Sex Book projects, perhaps reminding people why they loved Madonna. "You'll See" is an excellent ballad, another new song. Then you have other ballads like "Oh Father", "Rain", "This Used To Be My Playground", "Live To Tell", "I'll Remember", "Forbidden Love", "Something To Remember" and more. Overall a nice collection of ballads from Madonna.

By 1996, much had been made about Madonna the celebrity, but little is said about Madonna the artist. While some of her songs remain some of the greatest pop records ever, many people tended to focus on her "SEX" book and her risque stage antics than her music. Many people never realized her sensitive, loving side. In 1996, she decided it was time to do it. So what better to release a collection of ballads? "Something To Remember" was the result, and it was truly memorable. This cd has some of Madonna's finest ballads and biggest hits from the 1980s' and 1990s'; "Take A Bow" (her biggest hit ever with 7 weeks at number one), the chilling "Live To Tell", the captivating "Take A Bow" sequel "You'll See" and of course, the classic, timeless "Crazy For You". This song was all the rage at high school dances in 1985. Also, Madonna recorded new songs like the pretty "Forbidden Love" and the eerie cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You". The album's title track (originally from the "Dick Tracy" soundtrack) is among Madonna's best works. The reason I gave this cd 4.9 stars rather than the full 5 stars is because there are several songs I would have loved to have seen on this collection. For instance, I would have loed if "Cherish" was included. This is possibly Madonna's purest love song, a celebraion of love power. And while it's a great dance song, "Like A Prayer" is in the same vein. There are plenty of other songs here I could list but it would take up to much space. Overall, a worthwhile collection of Madonna love songs. Let's hope she releases a volume 2 of her ballads. These songs are among her best, and let's hope she makes more like them.

Madonna - Something To remember,

After the "not so succesful"(but intelligent) Erotica it was time to turn back to "not sex-related" music. Bedtime Stories was the first step, then the second is "something to remember"STR is a collection of old madonna ballads plus some new material. The old material is placed correctly to keep old fans, then the new to take some new...and it works! (STR sold more than BS and erotica) The overall result is an album that sounds really simple and good, really listenable and enjoyable. The collaboration between Madonna and Massive Attack (I Want You) it's one of the best madonna tracks. Other Highlights include "You'll see" , "I'll remember" (the first time on an album) and the remix of "love don't live here anymore". The old tracks are ok. This is to proove you that madonna is not only a "sex about woman".

An amazing album by Madonna, filled with a collection of slower tunes/ballads by her. Also included are some new tracks never heard, or remixed, which truy make this album special. Some standouts include: "I'll remember", the theme from the movie "With Honors". Really nice song 9/10 "You'll see", a great slow song, kinda similar feel to it as "take a Bow" 8/10 (Also check out the fast version which is great) "This Used to be my playground", theme from "A League of their own", slow, sad song, but nice. 8/10 "Love don't live here anymore" - a remake of the song she did in the 80's, however this version is a remix, and if u take the time to listen u'll hear the different beats from the original, and will really like it 8/10 Forbidden love - pretty song 9/10 Oh Father - check out "Like a Prayer" album for reviews 9/10

Powerful, Moving, Impressive: Something you'll Remember,

This is one of those works by Madonna that gets over looked for some reason. Call it another "greatest hits" with a twist. Madonna puts forth an album with ballads that are not so much the love songs as we're used but are songs about love. Whether it's romantic love gone wrong as with "You'll See," the love that exists between fathers and daughters in "Oh Father," or diminishing love as featured in "This Used to be My Playground," Madonna sets aside an album to reveal her more intimate side. While it may be somewhat of a shocker from a woman who put out albums entitled "Bedtime Stories" and "Erotica" and has been seen rolling around a stage singing 'Like a Virgin,' Madonna truly is amazing on this CD.There were new tracks such as "You'll See," "Take a Bow" and "I Want You," they go well with tracks that have been popular in the past. This is one of the few CDs you'll be able to find her "This Used to be My Playground" from the movie 'A League of Their Own.' This CD also has a remixed version of "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" which is beyond excellent. It's moving, sweeping, the drums and sounds in the background give you a sense of longing as well as anger over a lost love. There is also a second version of "I Want You" done with an orchestra. This was one of the best tracks in my opinion. It has Madonna showing off her vocals. She gives a sense of haunting, hurt and a mix of emotions that leaves you with an odd feeling. While this could be counted as a "best of" collection, it stands out on its own as a collection of Madonna showing off her sensitive side. She re-invents herself here, stripping down the sexed-up pop singer we knew from the early 90s. Here she settles down which actually works for her. I'd say this and her later albums "Ray of Light" and "American Life" are in their own league because they are albums where Madonna puts aside the desire to produce dance chart topping hits for more meaningful songs filled with substance. This is an impressive collection of some of Madonna's best work and its unfortunate that it isn't given a lot of attention and or recognition these days. If your a Madonna fan, this is a must for your collection. If not, I'd still suggest you give it a try; you may discover that your a fan of the less flashy Madonna.

Considering Madonna was the "diva" during the pop music era in the '80s, she has proven herself well. This album is definitely a "taker". I would recommend it to anyone.

Simply Astonshing....You'll See.,
This review is from: Something to Remember (Audio CD)
This Collection of Madonna's greatest ballads, is by far one of the greatest collections of popular music ever made.It dives into the future ( at the time ) of Madonna's upcoming career paths and choices with the new songs , I Want You , You'll See, and One More Chance. Which are all just superb and contain some of her best vocals to date , yes, even this date in 2004. It also gives us the Madonna hits from the 80's , Crazy For You, Live To Tell, and a newly re-vamped version of the yet unreleased song Love Don't Live Here Anymore. Which at this sets release , was finally released as a single and a video. Although it did not chart particularly well, it was still so nice for any true fan to have this song released and made into a video. I find this collection to be still one of the most played CD's i own by Madonna. Each Song is a Masterpiece....especially the most magnifecent song of her career You'll See, by far my favorite song by her. In a world full of great songs by many artists , and so many wonderful Madonna songs to choose from. You'll See is just an astonshing piece of pop perfection, and co-produced with the great David Foster. If you are looking for an awesome Madonna collection. I hope you will not be disappointed , and you should'nt be, If you choose Something to Remember.

MULTI-PLATINUM BLOND,
This review is from: Something to Remember (Audio CD)
10 years after becoming a household name in 1985, Madonna entered her "high-class fashion supermodel/conservative adult-contemporary pop diva" phase by posing in a series of Versace print ads - she rocked Versace on the cover of SOMETHING TO REMEMBER - and dropping this, a collection of her biggest ballads. She had most recently come off her eleventh #1 hit, "Take A Bow", when she switched gears yet again. This transformation was best explained by Madonna's then-recent hiring by Director Alan Parker to star in the film version of the musical EVITA, of which the music video for "Take A Bow" was influenced. The album itself covered all the bases, from 1985's sweet "Crazy For You" and 1994's "I'll Remember", to 3 then-newly-recorded songs: the Celine Dion-esque "You'll See", the acoustic guitar-driven "One More Chance" and a cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You". These love songs showed and proved that Madonna - primarily known as a high-energy dance artist - was truly a big softie at heart. With SOMETHING TO REMEMBER, Madonna comfortably segued into her operatic EVITA phase, much to the delight of critics and fans alike. Madonna promoted this record with a music video for "You'll See", a visual sequel to "Take A Bow".

Good, But Some Ommisons,

I purchased this album at K - Mart on family trip Hershey, PA. It was supposed to be a collection of Madonna's best love songs. I knew just about every track on the album, with the exception of "One More Chance", "Something To Remember" and "I Want You", the latter a haunting reworking of a Marvin Gaye. I enjoyed every song n this album, but then I thought, are these really all the best? Not that the songs are terrible. Songs like "Crazy For You", "Live To Tell" and "Take A Bow" show Madonna at her softest. Many people don't know that besides looking hot, she's one hell of a singer. Still, for 14 tracks, they could've included a few more tracks. I would've loved to have seen "Cherish" included. I think it's Madonna's purest love song, a celebration of the power of true romance. Even faster numbers like "Like A Prayer", "Angel", "True Blue" and "Open Your Heart" are worthy of inclusion. I not saying this album has to include her biggest hits, but those previously mentioned songs easily fall into the love song category and are worthy of inclusion on this album. Anyone with a cd burner and the complete Madonna catalogue can do just as good, maybe better. Overall, "Something To Remember" is not a bad collection. Every song here has emotion, ache and love conquering them. Still, it's not a complete collection of Madonna's best love songs by any means. |
