What a talent! With perfect delivery of witty and funny lyrics, stunning music, and not to be pigeon holed style, Lyle Lovett delivers! This release made me a fan, if not a believer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stand By Your Man, Sep 20 2003
By
This review is from: A/H Large Band (Audio CD)
Lyle Lovett is a diamond among the rough. In this album his true talent shines through- he starts with a bluesy sound and ends with a more folk rock country style. He writes the lyrics, understands the simplicity of country music and is able to blend the lyrics and music with his marvelous melodic voice. He is a shy man and when seen in concert suddenly appears on stage in a brilliant white shirt, jeans and cowboy boots with his guitar in hand; the big band behind him making his music come to life while wearing white shirt and jeans. They are superb and easily swing from the blues to country.
A favorite song from this CD is "Here I Am" and "Nobody Knows Me But My Baby". He sings "Stand By Your Man" as if written for him.
The big band behind Lyle Lovett is able to exemplify his true voice- a simple man, singing a simple song, loving every minute of it. One of his best. prisrob

This is an incredible release by one of the most talented and most overlooked artist of our time. This is a great combination of jazz/folk/rock/country that has ever been assembled on one disc. I really enjoy "Crying Shame" and "What Do you Do". However, the last 3 songs are my favorites and get the most play in my CD Player: "Nobody Knows Me", "If You Were to Wake Up", and "Once is Enough" - easily 3 of my all-time favorite Lyle songs. This CD is breath-takingly fresh in its instrumentation, writing, and delivery. Easily one of the best releases of late 80's.

Lyle is one of my favourite artists and this CD is his best!

It drivesme crazy when he is classified as a country musician because his workspans a large musical spectrum including gospel, pop and big band. Hislyrics often tell a story, make you laugh and always speak to you in asimple yet meaningful way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Night of Listening, Jun 6 2001
This review is from: A/H Large Band (Audio CD)
A very good album to listen to whether it's just to enjoy with friends or with your significant other. Very fun and sweet with lyrics that do better than the Nashville sutdio machine or the up & coming swing bands. Best love song is track 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars TRADITIONAL AND TRANCENDENTAL AT THE SAME TIME, Feb 9 2001
By
This review is from: A/H Large Band (Audio CD)
Lovett is quite an oddity. He can perform traditional Country music better than any of the Nashville ilk, but his real strength is his hybrid of Texas Swing, Big Band and R&B. He is routinely snubbed by the Nashville establishment, but manages to win a Grammy nearly every year. He doesn't play by the established rules of Country(rules that would have Ernest Tubbs spinning in his grave) and more than likely doesn't care much for Nashville anyway. This album really shows his diversity. It's all here. Everything from Country to R&B and Big Band and just about every combination of all of those rolled up into one number. From the sly, droll humor of "Here I Am" to the achingly beautifull "If You Were To Wake Up" you just can't lose. Don't ever pass up the opportunity to see him perform with his phenomenal band.

This man can do it all! He writes the most clever lyrics, composes his own music, and can hop from one musical genre to another effortlessly. He has an incredible voice and impeccable timing when delivering his subtle lyrics. This is not your twangy country, and it is not the 50's rock sounding country of today. I saw Lyle Lovett in concert and was blown away. He has 12 excellent musicians that tour with him and they are so tight! Lyle Lovett has a big band sound on about half his songs, then goes into blues on one, then throws in a gospel song to grab your attention, and then will do a twangy county song just so it is impossible to pin him into a category. You have to listen to his music to understand because there is no adequate way to explain the incredible combination of his music and lyrics except to say it is like a breath of fresh air.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind Expanding, Format Bending, Truly Amazing, Aug 10 2000
This review is from: A/H Large Band (Audio CD)
This was the first Lyle Lovett music I had ever heard, and I now own every one of his CD's. With a couple of hints that one day he would move in this direction on his earlier discs, he does what few artists, if any, have ever done before. He successfully mixes big band, soul and blues music...with country music!

Has this ever been done before? If it had been done before, I had never heard it. In a truly courageous manner, Lyle opens this CD with the track "Blues Walk", an instrumental. Then, the next few songs are a wonderful array of blues and soul music serving as an excellent showcase for his songwriting talents and the amazing musicians he has backing him up in his "Large Band".

There is love, confusion, and humor...and then all of sudden, Lyle lets loose with a version of "Stand By Your Man". Hearing him sing this song, you would think it was written for a man. With this song, the rest of the disc (save for the last song) is all traditional country music. The transition makes sense. The mix of the soul and country songs make sense. The themes travel seamlessly throughout the entire disc.

Do yourself a favor and buy this disc. Lyle Lovett is one of those artists who, when he is gone, people will finally realize what they have been missing. He has one of the best voices in music today, his songwriting is at once humorous, touching, heartwarming and sad, and his "Large Band" is a collection of the finest musicians working today.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to any collection!, July 28 2000

I was pleasantly surprised by this CD. I was really introduced to Lyle's music through some friends of mine who are musicians. I enjoy listening to this CD over and over. It has a range of songs to titilate any mood that you are in. My favorite song is Nobody Knows Me. Very romantic and a great mellow love song. Then there is Here I Am which tells a story of sorts in a way that gets you perked up and grabs your attention. This CD has motivated me to purchase others of Lyles such as Live in Texas. While the are a couple of the same songs (ones everyone loved from this album) it has another terrific assortment and captures Lyles amazing style and talent.

I thought he'd be too country for my tastes, until I saw this show live. Is there such a thing as intellectual-Texas-jazz-blues-with-giggles? Kicker-music this is NOT, the large band sound is really HOT. The songs are so infectious and smart you want to laugh and dance. It is fun, flashy, sexy and very grown up. And, here's the kicker, even my 18 yr old son likes it (He's usually way too cool for my music!) The vocalists are just fantastic whether they take a solo turn or harmonic back-up. I'm giving this CD to some of my favorite people this Christmas.
